2022 How to Plan for Summer Homeschool

May 1, 2022 · In: Curriculum, Planning

Some links on this page are affiliate links which means that, if you choose to make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I greatly appreciate your support!

Some years, we’ll take a longer break in the summer. However, most years, I find we sustain our learning better by planning a summer rhythm of reading, writing, and math. Also, since most people take vacations and crowd the beaches and museums, it is often more convenient and affordable to do those things in the off-peak seasons for homeschool families.

Someone on IG asked me about how we handle negative attitudes toward summer school. I feel it has a lot to do with the perspective towards what school looks and feels like. I think over time my kids have grown used to year-round schooling. Also, with a Charlotte Mason style of homeschooling, it feels light and interesting because of the rich literature and simple narrations.

Reading Summer Road Trip

If you have been following along with us on Instagram for over a year, you saw we used a Read Through the USA guide from Orchard Reads last summer. It is exactly as it sounds! Reading your way through each state. So much fun, and I did not want to rush through it in any way. We actually spread it out more by adding recipes and doing some mapwork. It is 38 weeks, so we only got about 1/3 of the way through. So, this summer, we will be picking this back up to continue our reading road trip.

Reading through summer!
Reading our way though the USA!

Summer on the Coast

In an effort to focus on our local area, we’ll begin Around California from Beautiful Feet Books. I’ve been meaning to do this for a couple years, but now is the time! The book list looks SO good, and I cannot wait to dive in. Have you ever tried a literature pack from Beautiful Feet Books? I’d love to know your favorite.

Intro to Medieval History

A Peaceful Morning Time

We used The Precious People from The Peaceful Press this past school year, and loved it so much, that I picked up The Kind Kingdom. This 30-week curriculum uses the Narnia book series, which we have been wanting to read for a while. This curriculum includes copywork, poetry, hymns, Bible, art, and even has recipes. My plan is to use this as a slow morning time throughout the summer and continue on into the regular school year until we finish.

Other Options

If you’re interested in a easy breezy study of the states, we have used CM Simple Studies: America. It uses The Children’s Book of America by William J. Bennett. Each short lesson offers a one-chapter read aloud, a prompt for narration and corresponding coloring pages to print off for each student. This is another study we used last summer.

For math, we are going to use the free trial of Teaching Textbooks. They offer the first 15 levels of any level for free. I want to take it easy with actual teaching in the summer, so this is a nice option for math maintenance in that they teach the lessons and even grade the work completed. I like that you can download the app to a device and use it on the road, and it will sync with other devices so your child can stay on pace. If this goes well, we may subscribe as a supplement to continue through the school year.

Ready to Plan?

If you homeschool year round or are planning out the next school year, I have a simple curriculum planning sheet that may help. It benefits me to visually see the curriculum I’m considering on paper for each child to see if the pieces fit well. Thank you for supporting this space, and I’d love to hear what you are doing this summer. Happy planning!

Kicking off the school year with these read-alouds Kicking off the school year with these read-alouds for my 6th grader, 9th grader, and 12th grader!

I’m so looking forward to a great year with my crew. Everything feels more treasured and thoughtful, rightfully so. Do you see anything in these piles that intrigues you?

What is your first read-aloud for the school year?

Another first day of homeschool in the books! Thi Another first day of homeschool in the books!

This one hit different, though. It’s Riley’s last “first day” of homeschool before graduating. I’m soaking up every bit of it.

We always start slow on day one. No rush and no stress. Introducing our morning meeting rhythm, which includes our favorite @worldwatchnews, a read-aloud, a math lesson, and easing into what I know will be a full, busy year ahead. Slow starts provide time to sort through all the logins, set up for each course, and talk about our boundaries, expectations, and hopes for the year.

This year I’m also shifting more of my time and attention to my 6th grader’s schooling. I chose curriculum with that in mind. Every kid learns differently, and that’s the beauty of homeschooling: we get to build the year around the child and life circumstances in front of us.

One thing that’s already in our morning meeting rotation: World Watch News. It’s such an easy, no-fuss way to keep current events part of our routine, and it is a welcome break from book work that ALL of my kids appreciate. Use the code “JUICEBOX” for 2 months absolutely free! It is such a great resource, and I know you will love it.

Comment “world watch” for a convenient link!

What are your first-day-of-homeschool traditions?

There’s a very specific kind of joy in cracking op There’s a very specific kind of joy in cracking open a brand new planner for the year ahead (nerd alert, I warned you).

I love sitting down with my iced coffee, praying over the months ahead, and envisioning what our homeschool days could look like. Other than the actual homeschool life lived, planning is one of my favorite parts of this!

This year I’m trying out the @wellorderedhomeschool planner and getting to make it beautiful is half the fun. Will give you my honest take as we go along!

They are offering 15% off right now. Comment “PLANNER” and I’ll send you the link.

This is the only “screen time” I hand over without This is the only “screen time” I hand over without a second thought.

It’s Night Zookeeper! My daughter is motivated to stay on task with her other subjects so she can earn her Night Zookeeper time. Somewhere along the way, she’s entered writing contests, received feedback from tutors, and just won the Star Writer Winner award. 🏆

It’s writing, spelling, and vocabulary wrapped up in these wild zoo quests she actually loves, with a parent dashboard on the back end if you ever want to lean on it within your ELA curriculum.

Purposeful, fun screen time that works for both of us? Yes please.

Want 50% off? Comment “NIGHT ZOOKEEPER” below, and I’ll send you the link. 💌

Confession: we were 100% studying Botany for 2026- Confession: we were 100% studying Botany for 2026-2027.

My daughter skimmed through both notebooks, and Botany won, hands down. Case closed... or so I thought.

Then we visited the Lowell Observatory in Arizona this spring. We paid the extra $5 for the rooftop presentation at night, and while the rest of us were shivering, she was frozen in place for a totally different reason...completely in awe.

In the gift shop, she asked, “Is it possible we study Astronomy instead?”

Here’s another thing about homeschooling I’m grateful for: we get to say yes to that. We get to follow the wonder instead of the plan.

So this year, we’re diving into Exploring Creation with Astronomy, and I already know we’ll be filling that student notebook cover to cover, because a completely filled-out @apologiaworld notebook might be the most underrated homeschool mom flex there is. 😅

We’ve been using @worldwatchnews for years! It started with searching for a way to incorporate current events in our homeschool days, and I found this subscription that includes 10 minutes of real-world news and entertaining stories that somehow always turns into the best conversations and prayer topics around the table.

An additional bonus is that it breaks up the read-alouds, which is a mutual and welcome pause, while also keeping us all informed.

Right now, new subscribers can try it completely free, and here’s the important part: you need to use my link (coupon code JUICEBOX automatically applied at checkout) for it to work.

Here are some of the more memorable books about th Here are some of the more memorable books about the ocean that we have used in our homeschool:

🌊 The Shark Lady by Jess Keating: The true story of how Eugenie Clark became the ocean’s most fearless scientist.
🌊 The Little Island by Margaret Wise Brown: written by the same author of the classic Goodnight Moon, The Little Island is about a kitten who visits and witnesses the changing seasons of this special place.
🌊 The Heart of the Samurai by Margi Preus: In 1841, a crew of Japanese fishermen find themselves at the mercy of New Englanders after their ship sank. Manjiro, a 14-year-old boy, is eager to learn everything he can about American culture.
🌊 Where the Wind Leads by Vinh Chung and Tim Downs: still one of the most memorable reads of my life. I am biased because my husband’s family has a similar story, but it was a fascinating retelling of fleeing Vietnam in hopes of freedom, safety, and autonomy.
🌊 Watercolor with Me in the Ocean by Dana Fox: We just all loved these watercolor books, and the ocean version is a favorite!

Dads and teens have a different dynamic, and I thi Dads and teens have a different dynamic, and I think that’s actually a gift.

Less conflict, but also fewer of those everyday moments that just naturally happen when you’re together all day. What I’ve seen in our home is that it’s not about keeping score or doing more, but about being intentional in the spaces that already exist. Rhythms and routines that say, “I was thinking about you.”

Simple things done faithfully over time add up to something really meaningful.

If you’re looking for a starting place to share with your husband, comment “dad books” and I’ll send over some of our favorites for dads and sons to read together.

A random summer homeschool day in photos… We did A random summer homeschool day in photos…

We did all the things in the morning, and then we did none of the things this afternoon. It was a full and varied day!

We beta-tested a friend’s game show room today (think escape room meets all the game shows you know of) and ended the afternoon with pho and good conversation with my teens.

This is what I want to remember about homeschooling. Not just the books and the lessons (although I love them!), but the days we said yes to something different and ended up making new memories.
