This post is all about our plans for summer homeschooling.
Over the years, I’ve taken a complete summer break, homeschooled year round, and seemingly everything in between. The nice thing is that whatever you choose, you and your kids are already in the mindset and lifestyle of continual learning!
I like to use summers as time to maintain some math and language arts skills. Additionally, it is the perfect time to sneak in some topical studies. For example, a couple summers ago, we dove into a tour of the United States. While last year, we focused on learning about the solar system.

Summer homeschooling is shaping up to be a little lighter. Mostly trying to maintain skills while getting a slight head start on a few literature based subjects. It has been a very busy year, and I do want to prioritize some rest and recovery. Looking forward to building momentum for the new school year!

Family Style
Most of our family style curriculum this summer will be trickling out of our school year! Continuing on in our study of the book of John (from this shop), which is short and sweet daily reading. We will watch our current events 10 minutes a day video.
Additionally, I have had this book for YEARS that I have been waiting to read with the kids. I think it is perfect for late elementary through high school, and we are finally here. Another read aloud we’ll work through together (and continue on throughout the school year) is How Jesus Built His Church. It is technically a Level 7 book, but it has enough beautiful photos and is written in an engaging way that I believe all of my kids can benefit from it.
I’m going to give my kids options for art and creativity. We were able to sample the beautiful new Math and Art course from Lily and Thistle. If you haven’t checked it out yet, take a look here! My daughter definitely is interested in completing more of the lessons. Another resource we are using is Idlewild’s Art Studies (use “JUICEBOXHOMESCHOOL” for a discount), which utilizes this art book.

Skill Maintenance
My soon to be 7th grader will be taking a summer math course with Thinkwell online. I had him take the placement test on their site, which I’m glad I did! The results were not what I expected, and I was planning to place him in a grade lower.
Our soon to be 4th grader recently started Apologia Math Level 5, and will continue on using that lightly throughout the summer. She has really taken to this math curriculum, and loves the short lessons, and hands on activities. You can use the code “trisha10” over at Apologia for a discount! She will also continue working through Taking Asia for Jesus, which is a beautiful resource for culture, geography, and church history!
Getting a Head Start
My soon to be 10th grader will be using a resource from Guest Hollow on Government, Economics, and Personal Finance. It utilizes many books, videos, articles, and even board games. I like the variety, and it especially works well for us in the summer time. Just keep in mind that you cannot do it all, and it was designed that way with an overabundance of suggestions. So, I spent some time combing through to select the books, videos, and activities to prioritize.
We are also planning to read together. The books planned so far are Virtuous and How the World Runs. Our summer is not too long, and I also want to leave room for free time since she is normally busy during the regular school year.
