According to @goodreads, our top genres in 2024 were history, historical fiction, and Christian. No surprise there! What were your top categories last year?

Reading together, even in these middle and high school years, has largely impacted our morning moods (🙃), cohesiveness, and relationships. I’m excited for another year of sharing books!

My default response to podcast and speaking requests: “Thank you so much for thinking of me, but I’ll have to pass.”

Why? Honestly, I often feel so inadequate. That’s probably a “me” thing, but when @julie.h.ross from @agentlefeast reached out, I felt God nudging me to pause and pray.

Homeschooling through the middle school and high school years has been stretching and growing me in the best ways. Julie, a fellow homeschool mom of high schoolers, and I had an amazing conversation that I’d love for you to hear. We dove into so many topics that I trust will be a blessing to you.

It has been a memorable experience teaching a relu

It has been a memorable experience teaching a reluctant writer. One practice that helped in the early stages of the elementary years was notebooking.

I learned about oral and written narrations from reading up on Charlotte Mason’s ideas on education. Simply put, it is the art of telling back what was read or heard in your own words. I toggled between oral and written narrations to ease into increasing our writing portions.

I aimed not to correct the writing, but to leave the focus on finding enjoyment in writing. We used notebooks with room for both illustrations and writing so that my reluctant writer was not overwhelmed by a blank page of lines.

Oftentimes, I would have them illustrate while I was reading aloud so those drawings would cue their memory as they narrate. Sometimes it came naturally, and sometimes required prompting questions or discussion after the chapter to ignite ideas.

Once narrations saturated our homeschool, I gradually added in more with science and history.

I eventually started all my kids in a formal writing curriculum that has leveled up their writing skills. However, notebooking was a huge help in overcoming initial writing reluctance in the elementary years!

👍🏽7th grade: The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner, Book 2) by James Dashner - I do not personally recommend this book, but did not want to ask my child to change his opinion. Use discretion as always.

Are you back to homeschooling this week? I want to drop you a little encouragement today. The winter slump months are powerful, and for me, it means adjusting expectations for myself and my kids. Here are some examples:

✨ Fun Read Aloud: Select your family read aloud intentionally with whole family fun in mind. Mr. Popper’s Penguins, All-of-a-Kind Family, The Vanderbeekers series, or The Trumpet of the Swan come to mind.

✨ Podcast or YouTube video: I have a few I have on deck for chore time, but I also recently subscribed to the membership side of @ashlee_graceandgrit channel. I receive a lot of motivation from hearing about how other moms in the season are working towards goals. Find someone who inspires you!

✨ Board games: Consider replacing math (or any subject) for a 2-3 weeks with related board games. Dog Crimes, Sushi Go!, Muffin Time, and Ticket to Ride Japan have been on our rotation lately.

✨ Research for next year: I used a clean page in my Home Planner to start brainstorming for the 2025-2026 school year. Writing some ideas down for each child based on where we are now already gave me a boost of inspiration!

✨ Just one thing: If life has thrown you way off rhythm, try adding just one or two subjects a week to ease into the fully loaded homeschool schedule.

✨ Life Skills: Try replacing subjects like math and science with cooking meals with your children. If you have more than 1 child, maybe rotate if you feel overwhelmed with many little “helping” hands. 😉 Work on learning how to tie shoelaces, wash a load of laundry from start to finish, or purge a toy bin.

Adjusting expectations is a big blessing for the season that calls for it. A wonderful perk of home education is that we can craft it the way that will best fit you and your family. Let’s enjoy that!

Hi! My name is Trisha, and my husband and I just

Hi!

My name is Trisha, and my husband and I just celebrated turning 20 (years of marriage). We were good friends in high school and started dating right after graduation.

We have three kids, whom I have had the honor of homeschooling since the beginning. I never could fully imagine we would be at this point -11 years later, still homeschooling now a 4th, 7th, and 10th grader. It has been the ministry that changed my life for the better.

On the side, I manage admin for @juiceboxmedia and enjoy content creation and marketing with a few homeschool brands I love. Other than that, I try to bake, dominate at Settlers of Catan (cities and knights!), and find smiles in iced coffee/milk tea, cheering on my family and friends, and sharing our homeschool life with whoever is curious about it.

I still can’t believe what started out as opening this app to share our homeschool journey with a few local friends has led to. This community is so dear to me. Thank you for being here and Merry Christmas to you!

I hope you all have the best time being refreshed and poured into by the faithful One who started this all, and the special people given to us to love on.

My recently new teen just received his very first safe phone, and I had to get his reaction as he has been patient with this decision. We are excited knowing the device is designed to keep him connected, while also protected. No internet browsing, no social media - just the essentials for staying in touch while fostering next-level independence.

Those are many of the expected ways our homeschool has changed with teens.

Time is so valuable and we have to be extra selective of how we use it.

We are in an era of teamwork and unity (for the most part). Seeing this shift to serving the family out of understanding is contributing to that.

It is a gift to see your teen find a passion, and find a supportive community along with it.

Many days require quick forgiveness from both parties. Resentment and grudges are easy, but the relationship is worth the work.

I gave up on pre-reading books a while ago, and I don’t regret it one bit. Again, time is so important, and I have to be choosy with how I invest it.

A big lesson I know is on the horizon is to be more open-handed with my children. Taking baby steps towards surrendering the small things is where I’m at now.

Unexpected changes that I didn’t see coming was how much I would get to genuinely laugh with my teens. It’s the birth of new inside jokes. It’s my time to shine (and for them to cringe) as the embarrassing mom who sings “oldies” in the car. It’s witnessing them figure it out, and exercise in perseverance. It’s a challenging season, but I didn’t know the kindness God would show us in balancing it out with unexpected joy.

Each has provided wonderful memories together, and all can be easily read together as a family. All Creation Waits is the only one my youngest didn’t always understand, but it was still worth reading.

Habit training was such a big part of our early ye

Habit training was such a big part of our early years of home education. Not only did it work towards providing structure and rhythm to our homeschool days, but we were able to cultivate spiritual disciplines and work on character as well.

This design is special to me. It is a reminder to myself and my family of what we are working towards and the progress made from those Laying Down the Rails lessons (😉 nod to my CM friends).

It’s a reminder to try again, to keep at it, and just take the next step forward in building the habit you want to become part of your heart.

I’m so thankful to @bonfire for this design available as a tee, a crewneck, or a hoodie. I pray anything I share here is an encouragement to you! 🤍
