2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum Choices

August 6, 2024 · In: Curriculum, Middle + High School

This post is all about our 2024-2025 homeschool curriculum choices for 10th, 7th, and 4th grade.

I cannot even tell you how many times I have already mistyped my children’s grade levels for next year. These tween and teen years are truly flying. Not only have all of my kids grown so much in height, but in their capacity. Learning, taking on responsibilities, and giving me much reason to pause in thanksgiving and laughter.

My family does a lot of freelance work collectively, so I appreciate the ability to plan for flexibility. It also means I have some busy seasons of work, and need to consider that when choosing homeschool curriculum. There once was a season where homeschooling was my main responsibility, and I’m so glad it was during their very early years. While homeschooling is still very much the priority, elaborate hands on projects are no longer the norm. It is a different season, and I am fully embracing it!

We are continuing to homeschool with a charter school, which has worked out well for our family. Our kids are very active in their extracurricular activities. So some of my choices for this homeschool year reflect saving time, independent learning, and a bit less ambitious than my default way.

This post is all about our 2024-2025 homeschool curriculum choices for 10th, 7th, and 4th grade.

2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 10th Grade

History

As my oldest moves into more online courses, history is one of the subjects I love to hold for us. This year, we will be venturing into American History with Guest Hollow. After working through part of their Government, Economics, and Personal Finance course, we wanted to trial their history.

Personally, I would not recommend doing two Guest Hollow courses at the same time. It is a lot of reading, and it is just so rich, that I prefer to hone in on one study at a time. The spine of American History is A Patriot’s History of the United States. This course includes suggested video links, articles, and games.

Language Arts

This year, she will be trying an Honors English Literature and Composition class with Blue Tent Online. Last year, along with a very busy and rigorous 9th grade of Honors English with AP Homeschoolers, she also had to complete A-G guide coursework in order to receive proper credit with our charter school. However, we quickly realized that even though we loved the course, the double workload was unreasonable.

Since she enjoyed her Honors Biology class with Blue Tent, we decided to try their English course for 10th grade. I have heard great things about her instructor from peers, so we are looking forward to it!

[RELATED POST: Homeschooling with a Charter School]

Math

After completing Geometry in 9th grade with High School Math Live, we decided to continue on. It was a difficult course for her, but she felt that had more to do with geometry than the curriculum. In 10th grade, she will take Honors Algebra 2. We really hesitated on the honors part because math is not her strongest subject, but since she enjoyed Algebra 1, she wanted to give it a shot.

Science

Another returner will be science at Blue Tent Online. Last year, she took Honors Biology 1, and really excelled. I was so surprised at how high her final grade was, and I credit her study skills and interest in the topic gained from all our years with Apologia science courses.

Electives

We are limiting it to 2 official electives this year. Continuing on with years of dance training, she will log her hours and receive elective credit for dance. Alongside that, she will continue her dual enrollment with a 3rd course of American Sign Language.

Together, we’ll read a series of books just one-on-one, that are relatable to her season. Here are some we read together last year for your reference.

In addition, we will work slowly through How the World Runs and Consumer Math at our leisure. I don’t have a deadline on getting through either of these so we’ll take our time.

Summary: 10th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 2024-2025

  • American History with Guest Hollow
  • Honors English Literature and Composition with Blue Tent Online
  • Honors Algebra 2 with High School Math Live
  • Honors Chemistry with Blue Tent Online
  • ASL 3 – dual enrollment
  • Dance
  • How the World Runs and Consumer Math
10th grade, here we come!

2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 7th Grade

History

My oldest went through Exploring World History, and I thought the format may be a nice change of pace for my younger two. As I chatted with the Notgrass team, I was debating between America the Beautiful and Uncle Sam and You. They recommended I try Uncle Sam and You since there is some election discussion within the text, and this being an election year. Brilliant!

Uncle Sam and You is their middle school level government and civics course. It includes primary source documents, and eight literature recommendations, which are included when you purchase the bundle. I will be using this with both my 7th and 4th grader. Notgrass sent me their Uncle Sam & You Bundle for free in exchange for my review.

My plan is to use the Student Workbook, which includes crossword puzzles, drawing activities, and tests, with my 4th grader. Then I will use the Lesson Review, which includes daily review questions, literature review, and tests more with my 7th grader.

Language Arts

Not much is changing in the area of language arts for my younger kids. We will continue with Learning Language Through Literature: The Green Book (use code “juicebox” for 15% off. There are 36 weeks easy to use daily lesson plans, which do not require much prep at all. 3 main units include poetry, short story, and research. The literature he will be reading includes The Star of Light, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and Much Ado About Nothing.

Next, our writing curriculum will be from IEW. He will start SSS-2B along with Fix It Grammar Level 4. We have been using IEW for over a decade, and have seen the fruit of our long-term learning!

[RELATED POST: Our Experience with IEW Writing Courses]

Math

Again, following big sister, he is taking Pre-Pre Algebra. This is an online course I found with High school Math Live, and it seems like the right fit! I was hesistant on starting him with pre-algebra just yet. Like a lot of my homeschool choices, I am not sure if that is the right choice, but we will find out soon! They have an online placement test which helped me feel more assured we are on the right track.

We will also continue with some financial literacy workbooks that we started in the summer.

Science

Another borrow from my oldest child, we will be using Exploring Creation with General Science (use code “trisha10″‘ for 10% off) for 7th grade. This is a big step up for my guy, and Apologia does a wonderful job of hand holding kids through this transition. The student notebook, in particular, really teaches how to take notes from the reading, and write lab reports independently. I love how it clearly explains how to execute science experiments with tips and reminders. It even provides a schedule and checklist, which I believe will really help my son step up in independent learning. Middle school is a great time to start leveling up in study habits and skills.

I picked up the lab kit from Nature’s Workshop Plus as usual for the convenience. Well worth it for our family!

Electives

My son wants to dabble in American Sign Language, and we recently heard of Homeschool ASL (use code “juicebox15” for 15% off) to start. It looks very organized with videos and support, so we’ll see how that goes this year.

Other than that, he enjoys learning breakdancing, coding, and Adobe suite programs. For breaking, he trains with a local crew that has been really fun. We have been exploring this coding program and enjoying that it works well for both my younger kids. Lastly, for Adobe programs like Illustrator and Premiere, we use Skillshare and my husband’s time when we can have it.

Summary: 7th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 2024-2025

  • History: Uncle Sam & You
  • Language Arts: LLATL The Green Book (use “juicebox” for 15% off), IEW SSS-2B, Fix It Grammar Level 4
  • Pre-Pre-Algebra with High School Math Live
  • General Science (use “trisha10” for 10% off) with Lab Kit
  • Homeschool ASL (use code “juicebox15” for 15% off)
  • Foundations in Worship

2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 4th Grade

History

I’m thankful to combine my 2 younger kids again for history. I know the days are numbered for combining subjects, so I’m really going to savor history together!

Uncle Sam and You is their middle school level government and civics course. It includes primary source documents, and eight literature recommendations, which are included when you purchase the bundle. The literature included in this bundle are:

  • Lincoln: A Photobiography by Russell Freedman (Units 5-6)
  • A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt by C. Coco De Young (Units 10-11)
  • Brighty of the Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry (Units 12-14)
  • Basher Five-Two by Scott O’Grady (Units 16-17)
  • Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry (Units 18-19)
  • The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder (Units 22-24)
  • The Wright Brothers: How They Invented the Airplane by Russell Freedman (Units 25-26)
  • Lost on a Mountain in Maine by Donn Fendler (Units 29-30)

My plan is to use the Student Workbook, which includes crossword puzzles, drawing activities, and tests, with my 4th grader. Notgrass sent me their Uncle Sam & You Bundle for free in exchange for my review.

Language Arts

She will continue with the Common Sense Press series Learning Language Through Literature: The Purple Book (use code “juicebox” for 15% off. There are 36 weeks easy to use daily lesson plans, which do not require much prep at all. The main units include everyday words, poetry, and speech and oral presentation. The literature she will be reading includes Farmer Boy, Trumpet of the Swan, Number the Stars, and Caddie Woodlawn.

Next, our writing curriculum will be from IEW. She LOVED SSS-1A, and will move on to SSS-1B along with Fix It Grammar Level 2. So glad to have found a strong writing curriculum for my kids!

[RELATED POST: Our Experience with IEW Writing Courses]

Math

For math, we tend to school year round to keep up with skills. So, she will work through Right Start Math and supplement with Apologia Math Level 5 (“trisha10” for a discount). Since Right Start Math is teacher intensive, I tend to use Apologia Math, which is more independent on the busy days. Both are hands on and I like showing different ways to get to the same concept and answer.

In January 2025, I plan to start Your Business Math: Bookstore Math from Simply Charlotte Mason. I used this series with my older two kids and love the practical application. Plus, the bookstore version will be extra fun for her because she’ll recognize many of the titles of her inventory.

Science

This will be my first time studying science one-on-one with my youngest. I’m super excited to sit with my little learner! I let her choose any topic from Apologia, and she chose Earth Science (use code “trisha10″‘ for 10% off). I showed her that she will get to make her own globe, and she was SOLD.

It will be my first time also using one of their updated full color student notebooks. It looks beautiful! We love the notebooking, schedule, visual diagrams, and lab reports which will continue to develop her study skills.

I picked up the lab kit from Nature’s Workshop Plus as usual for the convenience. Well worth it for our family!

Electives

I was sent the cutest box from Homeschool Languages for Spanish 1. We’re going to dive in! It includes a workbook, games, and flashcards that are all very colorful and attractive.

We’ll be finishing up Taking Asia for Jesus, and later starting Taking Africa for Jesus. It’s a beautiful geography, church history, and cultural study.

She will enjoy our lifetime membership to Lily & Thistle courses – there are so many to choose from! Watercolor School, Nature’s Art Club, and Around the World (geography and art). Additionally, online piano lessons (“LEARN” for 10% off) and coding are rotated in our loop schedule.

Summary: 4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 2024-2025

  • Homeschool Languages
  • Taking Africa for Jesus
  • Art courses, Piano lessons, and Coding (“CMJBH25” for 25% off)

2024-2025 Family Studies Curriculum Choices

As I mentioned in my video, I am being very selective with what I include in our morning meeting together. With more time needed for high school courses, independent studying, and after school activities, time is a factor I need to keep in consideration. Here is a brief rundown of what we will be using in our morning meeting with my 10th, 7th, and 4th grader together.

  • Proverbs Family Bible Study
  • World Watch News
  • Character Cards
  • Music Appreciation Study
  • How Jesus Built His Church
  • Foundations in Worship

I’ve very close to ordering LLATL for the first time for my 4th grader. I’m surprised to see you’re adding another writing curriculum. Does LLATL not have enough writing instruction? What did you feel is lacking?

Hi Laura! I personally like to emphasize writing in our homeschool. I love IEW’s writing program, and have seen much benefit from it for our kids. However, I know a lot of people who solely use LLATL for language arts, and love it! I just feel IEW is a great tool for building writing skills, and LLATL is wonderful for short lessons and my kids enjoy it.

I loved meeting some of you, and chatting about homeschooling. My kids were so helpful and loved sharing their personal experiences using and growing with Apologia science for so many years.

Also I was encouraged to meet many families who were planning to begin their very first year of homeschooling this fall. So excited for you! 🎉

Sharing online about homeschooling has its awesome moments, but talking to you in person about it is a JOY!

A simple yet effective practice we aim for over al A simple yet effective practice we aim for over all these years is SHORT LESSONS.

It may seem easy, but if you have children asking for “one more chapter,” or who love to do lessons in those early elementary years of innate wonder, it is tempting to let lessons linger. However, I have had to stop myself from reading on in order to build the habit of attention and cover a breadth of subjects with a positive attitude.

“Not the number of subjects but the hours of work bring fatigue to the scholar.”

The meaning of short lessons can vary depending on the age and temperament of your children. I have value in committing to short lessons because of the effect it has on my kids’ love of learning.

Does this practice give you a feeling of challenge or a feeling of relief?

I remember thinking Sally Clarkson’s words in Th I remember thinking Sally Clarkson’s words in The Life-Giving. Home sounded so far away. My kids were still in the single digits and the thought of focusing education on an atmosphere, discipline, and a life felt big. Here I was trying to survive.

Now that all my kids are in the double digits, I feel the urge to re-read her book. Asking yourself how do you want your children to think back on their childhood definitely deserves its moment. We have now, and are not guaranteed much more.

The intentionality of how we set our home life to be provides a direction for our next steps. The simplest practices and habits can change the tone and attitude toward learning and family life. For today, that means putting down my inbox and pulling out the ice cream after lunch. 😋

Balancing parenting and teaching is tricky in ever Balancing parenting and teaching is tricky in every season as a homeschool mom, but the teen years bring a whole new layer.

Because now, at least for me, it’s not just about lesson plans and corrected math problems. It’s a temptation to fire hose spray all the life lessons - how to manage time, how to cope with overwhelm, how to avoid the trap of people-pleasing, how to fail and not fall apart.

Oftentimes, I say too much. Other times, I say nothing and wonder if I missed a moment. It’s this quiet wrestle of discerning when to speak and when to wait - when to guide and when to let them come to you.

It’s not easy. It is an art that I have much to learn. There are days I second-guess if I’m doing enough or doing too much. But what’s helping me is learning that the long game matters more than the quick fix. That listening is often more powerful than lecturing. And that connection doesn’t involve constant correction.

If you’re navigating the teen years and figuring out how to wear both the parent and mentor hat, I’m right here with you.

I’d love to know - how do you decide when to lean in and when to pull back with your teens? Share some wisdom in the comments.

Homeschooling the middle school years has a very s Homeschooling the middle school years has a very special place in my heart. I recall being in 7th grade and telling myself to NEVER become a middle school teacher because I thought the kids were so naughty.

However, now that I have indeed become a teacher to middle schoolers, I realize what a crucial opportunity we have. Such impressionable minds and eager hearts to grapple with their growth and independence.

This book bundle is designed for the middle school years and includes stories of faith, courage, compassion, and more. I am excited to read them in our mornings (they are suitable for the range of ages of all my kids).

One thing I appreciate about these is that they have been re-published by @generations.ministries in original form and content. Take a closer look at this bundle by commenting “middle school” and I will send you the site!

I’ll never forget the moment one of my kids inte I’ll never forget the moment one of my kids interjected during a history read-aloud book to say, “Wait, is this a true story?”

That’s the beauty of using living books as a tool in your homeschool, especially for history. Instead of skimming over names and dates, we enter into a story. We have walked through ancient cities, eavesdropped on world changers, and felt the weight of big decisions made by real people (or at least in real settings).

For my soon-to-be 5th and 8th graders, we’re using a rich, literature-based history curriculum next year, and I’m already swooning over the book list. It’s the kind of resource that sparks conversations at lunch and lingers in their thoughts long after we close the book.

Curious what we’re using? Comment “history curriculum” below and I’ll send you the link!

I started homeschooling my daughter when she was j I started homeschooling my daughter when she was just 5 years old, with a heart full of hope (and some fear). Not long after, I also had a vision shaped largely by the Charlotte Mason philosophy - one rooted in truth, goodness, and beauty.

Now she’s halfway through high school, and I find myself grateful for the foundation that’s quietly and steadily been laid over the years:
• Giving her best effort, even when it’s hard
• The habit of attention in both work and wonder
• Family Bible study grounding our days in truth and ongoing inner work
• A genuine love for reading that spills into every part of life
• The stamina to read widely and narrate with thoughtfulness
• Eyes and ears aware of beauty and a heart that appreciates the arts

This journey hasn’t been by-the-book or easy for both of us, but it’s been rich and sanctifying. And what a gift it’s been to be stretched alongside her.

If you are just behind me or just getting started in your homeschool journey, I encourage you to faithfully move forward each day in the disciplines and good habits. Anything good takes remaining in Him and time to develop and grow.

Here’s to the second half of high school - and the lifelong learning that continues beyond it. Are you hoping to homeschool in high school too? What are your feelings about it?

CURRENTLY READING…including books that are read CURRENTLY READING…including books that are read side-by-side with my kids.

📖 For myself: Lift Your Eyes by Whitney Newby, if you’re familiar anything created by @brighterdaypress you already know this is thoughtful, practical, and nourishing to your mom heart.

📖 With my small group: Everyday Evangelism by Preston Perry, an insightful and down-to-earth look at how to make use of your daily norm for the Kingdom.

📖 With all of my kids: Rich Routines by Steve Houghton, this is the first time in a while I’ve selected a non-fiction book to read aloud altogether. It is practical, useful, and timely for us.

📖 With my high school daughter: Answering the Guy Questions by Leslie Ludy, our second book reading together by this author. She resets the standard for the character of young men that young women can seek out. I am also gaining insight for my son while reading this book.

📖 With my middle school son: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Stephen Covey, a favorite of my daughter’s, my son is now enjoying this practical book!

📖 History read alouds with my 7th and 4th graders: Basher Five-Two and Misty of Chincoteague, both are readers suggested by @notgrasshistory curriculum we are working through. We just finished Basher Five-Two today, which was a thrilling account of a pilot whose plane was shot down in Bosnia. We’ll begin Misty tomorrow!

Have you read any of these? I have to say all of them have been enriching in their own ways. See what #livingbooklegacy is up to, book-wise!

So many reasons to be grateful for homeschooling i So many reasons to be grateful for homeschooling in the teen years!✨ While many of these things can be accomplished without homeschooling, for our family, they would be incredibly difficult to execute.

Back in the early years, when I was exhausted but still reading yet one more picture book or scraping paste and pasta off the table - I never imagined what was waiting on the other side.

If you’re in the trenches, wondering if homeschooling through the teen years is worth it, let me encourage you: stick it out for the long run. The gift of preserved time together is invaluable, but perhaps one of the greatest blessings has been how the Lord is working *in me* - I never expected that homeschooling my teens would also be a masterclass in humility and growth for me! And for that, I’m deeply grateful. 🤍

Would love to hear from other homeschool moms - what has surprised you most about the teen years? ⬇️ Or if you’re almost there, what fears do you have?

📖 Want to be more consistent in the Word but st 📖 Want to be more consistent in the Word but struggle to make it happen? You’re not alone!

Life is full, but staying anchored in truth doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Often, the simplest and practical strategies can make something that seems far-fetched into an essential daily habit.

Whether you’re in a busy season or just looking for a fresh approach, these tips can help you build consistency.

Can you tell I have read Atomic Habits, Habits of the Household, and Building Spiritual Habits? 😉

Bonus tip: Find a study you love to sit with (comment “Bible study” for mine that just got restocked!) and pretty highlighters and pens help too.

The balance of family studies and high school work The balance of family studies and high school work load has been tricky this year.

One thing that has helped is having a loop schedule of subjects we enjoy studying together. This reel is a sample, but not totally accurate picture since every week varies.

Some subjects we are studying together in a daily rotation are the book of Proverbs, music appreciation, spanish, slang words, worship songs, art, and character studies.

Flexibility is key over the past couple of years. That is the benefit of a loop schedule because if you need to skip a day, you just do the next thing tomorrow. It’s been a season of releasing rigidity and embracing the time we do have together.

Do you use a loop schedule for your family studies or for extra curricular subjects? Let me know what you’re studying! It is so inspiring to hear the range of topics covered in a loop.
