2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum Choices

August 6, 2024 · In: Curriculum, Middle + High School

This post is all about our 2024-2025 homeschool curriculum choices for 10th, 7th, and 4th grade.

I cannot even tell you how many times I have already mistyped my children’s grade levels for next year. These tween and teen years are truly flying. Not only have all of my kids grown so much in height, but in their capacity. Learning, taking on responsibilities, and giving me much reason to pause in thanksgiving and laughter.

My family does a lot of freelance work collectively, so I appreciate the ability to plan for flexibility. It also means I have some busy seasons of work, and need to consider that when choosing homeschool curriculum. There once was a season where homeschooling was my main responsibility, and I’m so glad it was during their very early years. While homeschooling is still very much the priority, elaborate hands on projects are no longer the norm. It is a different season, and I am fully embracing it!

We are continuing to homeschool with a charter school, which has worked out well for our family. Our kids are very active in their extracurricular activities. So some of my choices for this homeschool year reflect saving time, independent learning, and a bit less ambitious than my default way.

This post is all about our 2024-2025 homeschool curriculum choices for 10th, 7th, and 4th grade.

2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 10th Grade

History

As my oldest moves into more online courses, history is one of the subjects I love to hold for us. This year, we will be venturing into American History with Guest Hollow. After working through part of their Government, Economics, and Personal Finance course, we wanted to trial their history.

Personally, I would not recommend doing two Guest Hollow courses at the same time. It is a lot of reading, and it is just so rich, that I prefer to hone in on one study at a time. The spine of American History is A Patriot’s History of the United States. This course includes suggested video links, articles, and games.

Language Arts

This year, she will be trying an Honors English Literature and Composition class with Blue Tent Online. Last year, along with a very busy and rigorous 9th grade of Honors English with AP Homeschoolers, she also had to complete A-G guide coursework in order to receive proper credit with our charter school. However, we quickly realized that even though we loved the course, the double workload was unreasonable.

Since she enjoyed her Honors Biology class with Blue Tent, we decided to try their English course for 10th grade. I have heard great things about her instructor from peers, so we are looking forward to it!

[RELATED POST: Homeschooling with a Charter School]

Math

After completing Geometry in 9th grade with High School Math Live, we decided to continue on. It was a difficult course for her, but she felt that had more to do with geometry than the curriculum. In 10th grade, she will take Honors Algebra 2. We really hesitated on the honors part because math is not her strongest subject, but since she enjoyed Algebra 1, she wanted to give it a shot.

Science

Another returner will be science at Blue Tent Online. Last year, she took Honors Biology 1, and really excelled. I was so surprised at how high her final grade was, and I credit her study skills and interest in the topic gained from all our years with Apologia science courses.

Electives

We are limiting it to 2 official electives this year. Continuing on with years of dance training, she will log her hours and receive elective credit for dance. Alongside that, she will continue her dual enrollment with a 3rd course of American Sign Language.

Together, we’ll read a series of books just one-on-one, that are relatable to her season. Here are some we read together last year for your reference.

In addition, we will work slowly through How the World Runs and Consumer Math at our leisure. I don’t have a deadline on getting through either of these so we’ll take our time.

Summary: 10th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 2024-2025

  • American History with Guest Hollow
  • Honors English Literature and Composition with Blue Tent Online
  • Honors Algebra 2 with High School Math Live
  • Honors Chemistry with Blue Tent Online
  • ASL 3 – dual enrollment
  • Dance
  • How the World Runs and Consumer Math
10th grade, here we come!

2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 7th Grade

History

My oldest went through Exploring World History, and I thought the format may be a nice change of pace for my younger two. As I chatted with the Notgrass team, I was debating between America the Beautiful and Uncle Sam and You. They recommended I try Uncle Sam and You since there is some election discussion within the text, and this being an election year. Brilliant!

Uncle Sam and You is their middle school level government and civics course. It includes primary source documents, and eight literature recommendations, which are included when you purchase the bundle. I will be using this with both my 7th and 4th grader. Notgrass sent me their Uncle Sam & You Bundle for free in exchange for my review.

My plan is to use the Student Workbook, which includes crossword puzzles, drawing activities, and tests, with my 4th grader. Then I will use the Lesson Review, which includes daily review questions, literature review, and tests more with my 7th grader.

Language Arts

Not much is changing in the area of language arts for my younger kids. We will continue with Learning Language Through Literature: The Green Book (use code “juicebox” for 15% off. There are 36 weeks easy to use daily lesson plans, which do not require much prep at all. 3 main units include poetry, short story, and research. The literature he will be reading includes The Star of Light, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and Much Ado About Nothing.

Next, our writing curriculum will be from IEW. He will start SSS-2B along with Fix It Grammar Level 4. We have been using IEW for over a decade, and have seen the fruit of our long-term learning!

[RELATED POST: Our Experience with IEW Writing Courses]

Math

Again, following big sister, he is taking Pre-Pre Algebra. This is an online course I found with High school Math Live, and it seems like the right fit! I was hesistant on starting him with pre-algebra just yet. Like a lot of my homeschool choices, I am not sure if that is the right choice, but we will find out soon! They have an online placement test which helped me feel more assured we are on the right track.

We will also continue with some financial literacy workbooks that we started in the summer.

Science

Another borrow from my oldest child, we will be using Exploring Creation with General Science (use code “trisha10″‘ for 10% off) for 7th grade. This is a big step up for my guy, and Apologia does a wonderful job of hand holding kids through this transition. The student notebook, in particular, really teaches how to take notes from the reading, and write lab reports independently. I love how it clearly explains how to execute science experiments with tips and reminders. It even provides a schedule and checklist, which I believe will really help my son step up in independent learning. Middle school is a great time to start leveling up in study habits and skills.

I picked up the lab kit from Nature’s Workshop Plus as usual for the convenience. Well worth it for our family!

Electives

My son wants to dabble in American Sign Language, and we recently heard of Homeschool ASL (use code “juicebox15” for 15% off) to start. It looks very organized with videos and support, so we’ll see how that goes this year.

Other than that, he enjoys learning breakdancing, coding, and Adobe suite programs. For breaking, he trains with a local crew that has been really fun. We have been exploring this coding program and enjoying that it works well for both my younger kids. Lastly, for Adobe programs like Illustrator and Premiere, we use Skillshare and my husband’s time when we can have it.

Summary: 7th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 2024-2025

  • History: Uncle Sam & You
  • Language Arts: LLATL The Green Book (use “juicebox” for 15% off), IEW SSS-2B, Fix It Grammar Level 4
  • Pre-Pre-Algebra with High School Math Live
  • General Science (use “trisha10” for 10% off) with Lab Kit
  • Homeschool ASL (use code “juicebox15” for 15% off)
  • Foundations in Worship

2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 4th Grade

History

I’m thankful to combine my 2 younger kids again for history. I know the days are numbered for combining subjects, so I’m really going to savor history together!

Uncle Sam and You is their middle school level government and civics course. It includes primary source documents, and eight literature recommendations, which are included when you purchase the bundle. The literature included in this bundle are:

  • Lincoln: A Photobiography by Russell Freedman (Units 5-6)
  • A Letter to Mrs. Roosevelt by C. Coco De Young (Units 10-11)
  • Brighty of the Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry (Units 12-14)
  • Basher Five-Two by Scott O’Grady (Units 16-17)
  • Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry (Units 18-19)
  • The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder (Units 22-24)
  • The Wright Brothers: How They Invented the Airplane by Russell Freedman (Units 25-26)
  • Lost on a Mountain in Maine by Donn Fendler (Units 29-30)

My plan is to use the Student Workbook, which includes crossword puzzles, drawing activities, and tests, with my 4th grader. Notgrass sent me their Uncle Sam & You Bundle for free in exchange for my review.

Language Arts

She will continue with the Common Sense Press series Learning Language Through Literature: The Purple Book (use code “juicebox” for 15% off. There are 36 weeks easy to use daily lesson plans, which do not require much prep at all. The main units include everyday words, poetry, and speech and oral presentation. The literature she will be reading includes Farmer Boy, Trumpet of the Swan, Number the Stars, and Caddie Woodlawn.

Next, our writing curriculum will be from IEW. She LOVED SSS-1A, and will move on to SSS-1B along with Fix It Grammar Level 2. So glad to have found a strong writing curriculum for my kids!

[RELATED POST: Our Experience with IEW Writing Courses]

Math

For math, we tend to school year round to keep up with skills. So, she will work through Right Start Math and supplement with Apologia Math Level 5 (“trisha10” for a discount). Since Right Start Math is teacher intensive, I tend to use Apologia Math, which is more independent on the busy days. Both are hands on and I like showing different ways to get to the same concept and answer.

In January 2025, I plan to start Your Business Math: Bookstore Math from Simply Charlotte Mason. I used this series with my older two kids and love the practical application. Plus, the bookstore version will be extra fun for her because she’ll recognize many of the titles of her inventory.

Science

This will be my first time studying science one-on-one with my youngest. I’m super excited to sit with my little learner! I let her choose any topic from Apologia, and she chose Earth Science (use code “trisha10″‘ for 10% off). I showed her that she will get to make her own globe, and she was SOLD.

It will be my first time also using one of their updated full color student notebooks. It looks beautiful! We love the notebooking, schedule, visual diagrams, and lab reports which will continue to develop her study skills.

I picked up the lab kit from Nature’s Workshop Plus as usual for the convenience. Well worth it for our family!

Electives

I was sent the cutest box from Homeschool Languages for Spanish 1. We’re going to dive in! It includes a workbook, games, and flashcards that are all very colorful and attractive.

We’ll be finishing up Taking Asia for Jesus, and later starting Taking Africa for Jesus. It’s a beautiful geography, church history, and cultural study.

She will enjoy our lifetime membership to Lily & Thistle courses – there are so many to choose from! Watercolor School, Nature’s Art Club, and Around the World (geography and art). Additionally, online piano lessons (“LEARN” for 10% off) and coding are rotated in our loop schedule.

Summary: 4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 2024-2025

  • History: Uncle Sam & You
  • Language Arts: LLATL The Purple Book (use “juicebox” for 15% off), IEW SSS-1B, Fix It Grammar Level 2
  • Right Start Math and Apologia Math Level 5
  • Earth Science (use “trisha10” for 10% off) with Lab Kit
  • Homeschool Languages
  • Taking Africa for Jesus
  • Art courses, Piano lessons, and Coding (“CMJBH25” for 25% off)

2024-2025 Family Studies Curriculum Choices

As I mentioned in my video, I am being very selective with what I include in our morning meeting together. With more time needed for high school courses, independent studying, and after school activities, time is a factor I need to keep in consideration. Here is a brief rundown of what we will be using in our morning meeting with my 10th, 7th, and 4th grader together.

  • Proverbs Family Bible Study
  • World Watch News
  • Character Cards
  • Music Appreciation Study
  • How Jesus Built His Church
  • Foundations in Worship

Hi Laura! I personally like to emphasize writing in our homeschool. I love IEW’s writing program, and have seen much benefit from it for our kids. However, I know a lot of people who solely use LLATL for language arts, and love it! I just feel IEW is a great tool for building writing skills, and LLATL is wonderful for short lessons and my kids enjoy it.

Our summer homeschool rhythm is simple by design. Our summer homeschool rhythm is simple by design.

On the days we are home, we focus on math and language arts so it’s not a jolt of confusion when we return to fall. I am weaving in things that we used throughout the school year such as history read-alouds, morning meeting resources, and Night Zookeeper for my youngest, because it is just fun (free trial and 50% off available in my profile)!

Have any fun resources that you’re using this summer?

We are in the homestretch over here. This time nex We are in the homestretch over here. This time next year, I will have my first homeschool graduate, and I have been sitting with a lot of feelings this season.

Looking back, so much of my mental energy went to things that genuinely did not matter as much as I thought they did. Yes, curriculum and rhythms affected our days, but a lot more was at play on the day-to-day that I would have liked to spend more of my effort towards.

The things I underestimated? The speed of this all. The uneventful, ordinary days that I did not think to hold onto. The moments when they were just... kids, learning alongside me.

I do not regret choosing this path for our family. However, if I could go back and whisper something to early homeschool me, it would be: worry less about keeping up and more about showing up.

To anyone still in the thick of it, save this if you need the reminder. 🤍

Our homeschool days are feeling lighter, which fee Our homeschool days are feeling lighter, which feels about the right amount for summer. I’m noticing that since most things we are using are familiar to all of us, there is less need for my assistance.

It definitely feels like entering a new era with 2 high schoolers and a middle schooler. I am enjoying embarrassing them, and a different kind of relationship that is sometimes mom, and sometimes friend.

The book “Capable” by @sissygoff and raisingboysandgirls and it’s companion workbook for kids is a fresh addition to our rhythm. The workbook is great for kids ages 6-12, and would be a productive resource to utilize in the summer!

Our longest used curriculum is oddly the one I spe Our longest used curriculum is oddly the one I speak about the least, and that’s because it just works well for us year after year, kid after kid.

We’ve been using Institute for Excellence in Writing in our homeschool for over a decade, and it has been a solid and steady writing curriculum for each of my kids. I’ve seen an increase in confidence with a framework that makes sense.

This year my soon-to-be 6th grader is stepping into Structure and Style Year 2B and Fix It Grammar Level 4.

If you’ve ever wondered where to start with writing curriculum, @iew is the one I point homeschool moms to first. If you have questions about levels, placement, or whether it’s a good fit for your family, drop them below.

We pour so much care into setting a generous feast We pour so much care into setting a generous feast for our children’s minds. However, somewhere between the read-alouds, the math lessons, and the snacks, it’s easy to forget that our minds are hungry too.

Charlotte Mason called it Mother Culture: the ongoing practice of keeping our own minds alive and growing. Not one more thing on the to-do list, but a way to preserve your personhood while we pour out.

So here’s what’s on my plate this summer (at least on paper). 🤍

A feast doesn’t have to be elaborate to be generous. A feast for them. A feast for us, too. What’s feeding your mind this summer?

I just unboxed our 2026–2027 history, Bible, and literature for my youngest, and I honestly got a little emotional. We are using Sonlight Level F, which covers the Eastern Hemisphere, and it instantly brought me back to my very first year of homeschooling because I used @sonlightcurriculum with my oldest!

Now here I am, opening it again for the first time with my youngest daughter, and it feels wonderfully nostalgic.

What I already love is how literature-rich it is. I can already picture the read-aloud moments, the conversations, and the places we’ll “travel” together through these books.

If you want to see the full unboxing with all my chatter and check out what packages they offer, comment “history” and I’ll send you both my YouTube unboxing video and affiliate link. 🤍

It just helps keep us in the flow of a disciplined day, with extra time for play and exploring their personal interests.

We talk a lot about academics in homeschooling… bu We talk a lot about academics in homeschooling… but what about capability? #ad

Raising kids who can think, act, contribute, and take initiative in the real world, that’s the long game. I’ve been reading Capable from @sissygoff @raisingboysandgirls and @bethany_house_nonfiction, and it’s been such a timely reminder for me in this season with older kids.

A few small shifts I’m focusing on lately:
• inviting more ownership in daily responsibilities
• giving space for problem-solving before stepping in
• following up on their follow-through
• letting real-life practice be part of their education I’m learning that raising capable kids starts with trusting the process a little more than controlling it (hard for me!).

If this is something you’re thinking about too, you’re not alone.🤍

If everyone can use a fresh spark in the homeschool rhythm, check out Night Zookeeper! It’s been such a fun shift in our days. It gives a structured language arts program, but in a way that feels playful and engaging. A perfect little spring reset.

This principle is one I came back to when I was te This principle is one I came back to when I was tempted to simplify things too much for my kids, especially in their younger years. Mason believed children have the mental power to engage with real, rich, meaningful knowledge presented as living ideas. A generous curriculum. A trusting heart.

It was never close to a perfect scene, and I didn’t consistently have the positive homeschool vibes 😅, but I can see now how the Lord can still use that! The blessing of homeschooling is time, but when you do it for the long run, you also get to see the other side of those early challenges and doubts.

One thing the homestretch of homeschooling is teac One thing the homestretch of homeschooling is teaching me is this: so much of what felt small in the early years was actually foundational.

The habit of attention, a steady homeschool rhythm to our days, narrations, chores, church life, nature study, discipline, family read alouds...

At the time, it can feel repetitive and almost invisible. At times, it felt like a fight to keep at it and not lose my mind.

Years later, those same practices begin showing up with a new look. I see focus, initiative, spiritual rootedness, a sense of responsibility, and connectedness.

We are planting and toiling, often unseen, long before we see a hint of growth.

The fruit may come slowly, but it does come. 🤍

Save this for the days when the small things feel insignificant. What seeds are you planting in this season?

Nothing brings science curriculum to life like inc Nothing brings science curriculum to life like including hands-on science labs for kids! I used to dread science experiments because it just felt like a lot of work, but here are some things that have eased the process:

🔬 Remind your child and yourself that the goal of science labs are to discover, experiment, and let your curiosity play. It’s meant to be fun, not perfect!
🔬 Fun may mean a little mess to clean at the end, and that’s okay because we will all help clean up.
🔬 If you can, purchase a supplemental lab kit. I personally love @naturesworkshop - they have supplies organized by lesson, which was a game changer.
🔬 I found these “messy mats” online that are waterproof and help contain things. We use them for science labs and art projects to protect surfaces.
🔬 Use a notebook to record lab findings and/or take photos to print and save in their notebooks. We like the @apologiaworld colorful and engaging student notebooks for processing information well and making each lesson fun! Use code “TRISHA10” for a discount on those.

Do your kids like doing science labs in your homeschool? Share your tips for ACTUALLY DOING THEM!

If you want books that quietly shape character, st If you want books that quietly shape character, start here...

Some of the books that have added a lot to our homeschool most deeply are the true stories. 🤍

There is something so powerful about placing real lives in front of our kids. Stories of courage, conviction, sacrifice, faith, and ordinary people choosing obedience in hard moments stay with them in such a different way.

Some longtime favorites:
📚 Portraits of Integrity: A Family Treasury, real people who demonstrated Godly character
📚 YWAM biographies, which have made such meaningful family read-alouds over the years, and wonderful independent reads for middle schoolers.

These kinds of books have sparked some of our best conversations about character and what it looks like to live with purpose.

If you love biography-rich homeschooling too, comment “books” and I’ll send over some of our family favorites.

Some things I’m not planning to repeat with my you Some things I’m not planning to repeat with my younger kids (sorry, first kid! 😉)...

Not that the first time was a big fail, but walking through the high school years has a way of shaping you.

There are things I see a little clearer.
There are things I want to hold with more gentleness.
There are things I don’t want to rush past.

Homeschooling in different seasons has reminded me that we’re growing right alongside our kids. These are just a few quiet shifts I’m making as I go.

If you’re in a similar season, I’d love to hear. What is something you’re doing differently now?

We added this 360° rotating bookshelf from @Flycitymall and my daughter had the best time filling it with her favorite books, games, and even a stuffy.

It’s one of those pieces that’s both practical and pretty... everything within reach, easy to rotate, and somehow makes reading feel even more inviting.

Ours is the gold 5-tier, but they have other colors and sizes depending on your space!

If you’ve been looking for a simple way to make books more visible and loved in your home, this is such a sweet option.

Comment “bookshelf” and I’ll send you the link + my discount code!

Some of our very favorite stories are those we hav Some of our very favorite stories are those we have read together and have a strong theme of FAMILY.

The kind of stories that squash our own bickering, bring everyone on the same page, and gently shape how our kids see family, unity, and what really matters.

These are a few of our favorite family-centered living books we’ve come back to over the years. Those special stories that I will want to keep my shelf long after they are grown!

If you’re looking to add more of that to your days, I’d love to share a larger list of favorite family read-alouds with you.

The quiet homeschool days rarely make the highligh The quiet homeschool days rarely make the highlight reel, but they tend to be the ones that shape the most. 🤍

Homeschooling is rarely flashy.
Mostly it’s small, ordinary moments that slowly add up over time.

If you ever feel like your days look too simple, save this as a reminder that simple is often exactly where the building happens.
