How to Get Back into a Homeschool Rhythm

In planning out my week, I thought about a few small things that have big impact in returning to rhythm after an extended break. We typically school year-round, but take longer breaks in the summer and winter, with a week off here and there.

Meal Planning

I am actually surprised how much of a weight off my shoulders it is to simply write out the plans for lunches and dinners ahead of time. Meals seem to sneak up on us everyday, but with a plan, I can proactively squash that mild panic or fast food temptation.

Set the Table to Start the Rhythm

Laying out morning menus and narration notebooks (my favorite are the top bound Ruth Journals) the night before has been so helpful! When the kids come down to start the day, they grab breakfast and we can get right into Bible without much delay.

Kid Planners

I purchased each of my kids a planner. My little kids use inexpensive dated planners from Amazon, while my middle schooler is using this more detailed planner (discount code coming soon).

They fill out the daily subjects, and I add in more details like their reading assignments, chores, and loop subjects. This has helped immensely when I have to step away for a phone call or appointment because they know what needs to be completed that day without waiting for me to return.

Curriculum that Fosters Rhythm

Choosing a curriculum or plan that is living books based has made the process of jumping back into homeschool rhythm more enjoyable. Living books have become our compass for learning. They show us which way to move next. Knowing my kids will find joy in the next we’ll dive into has been encouraging to me. Also, I have found that using a planner you love helps too (my homeschool planner is irresistible to me!).

For a long time, I thought giving my teens freedom For a long time, I thought giving my teens freedom would feel like one big moment of letting go. It turns out that it is actually a whole lot of small ones.

These last few months, for #homestretchhomeschooling we have talked about discernment and raising capable independent thinkers. What comes next is giving them room to live it out, while we are still close enough to help.

The chain gets longer as they show readiness. It can also get a little shorter for a season. Both are love.

Where is the chain moving in your house right now?

Soon, I will have a guide for these conversations with your teen. Comment “VIP” to make sure you are on my email list to hear about it first!

Reading aloud as a family is something I’m SO glad Reading aloud as a family is something I’m SO glad we started prioritizing early on and continue to do even in the high school years.

These are the books that are stand outs to our family over the years.

Comment “read alouds” for this list and even more of our favorites over the last decade!

What are some of your read-alouds we should not miss?

Homeschool day in the life: a typical fall Friday Homeschool day in the life: a typical fall Friday with my tween and teens 🍁

3 things that make our flexi Fridays work:
1️⃣ Morning meeting anchors the day, especially when my kids scatter to their different responsibilities afterward.
2️⃣ Independent work (math, writing, science) means I can tend to work and emails. I can’t believe we’re at this stage! It feels so recent that I had my hands in every subject.
3️⃣ A read-aloud with my little is time I’ll never regret.

Is Friday a full school day at your house… or a flexi day like ours?

Comment FULL or FLEXI below 👇 I’m so curious how you do it!

Morning basket, teen edition. 🧺 Who says it has t Morning basket, teen edition. 🧺

Who says it has to retire when your kids become teens? Ours just looks a little different now: weird start times, a lot more choosiness about what makes the cut, and way better conversations.

Simple, rich, and still so worth it in the tween and teen years.

Want your teens to think of others without you hav Want your teens to think of others without you having to remind them every time? 👋🏽

Keep the cards ready. This greeting card box is beautiful, and it’s also become a quiet way to disciple my teens. It has 40 cards for birthdays, thank yous, sympathy, and “thinking of you” moments. Each tab even has writing prompts and a verse, so my kids aren’t stuck staring at a blank card.

Kindness is easier when the supplies are within reach!

Comment “cards” for the link!
