In our years of homeschooling, we have found a few supplies that have proved useful and durable for art. I shared some of our favorite art curriculum in a post if you would like to check that out first.
Soft Chalk Pastel Supplies
A few of our art courses called for soft pastels. I had a couple different types, but our favorite was the Jackson brand. They are smooth! A friend gave us a pack of this Strathmore chalk paper, which works great. For special pieces that we want to hang or keep, I spray it with a fixative aerosol so it doesn’t get dusty. The great thing is you can still revise your work after applying the spray.
Watercolor Supplies
This is our favorite medium for art! It could be because most homeschool curriculum incorporates watercolor in different ways. Enjoyable for little kids and kids at heart. These journals have been so good to us. We use them all the time. The paint set is meant for travel, but it is another staple around here. My littlest one likes the brushes that are included, but my older daughter enjoys higher quality brushes.
Special Pencils
We also have dived into charcoal and watercolor pencils, respectively. These are great for portraits and still life when you want more control. My middle schooler particularly uses these for different projects.
Quality Art Supplies?
My kids really enjoy creating. Honestly, I’m not sure which came first: the supplies or the hobby of art. Everything I mentioned here is not the highest of quality, nor is any of it necessary. I view it as an investment in their creativity and calm. You know what would help your kids flourish best!
