I am so excited to review The Precious People, but let me start from the beginning. Our first venture with The Peaceful Press was with their Advent study called Unearthing Wonder. Put simply, what I found were rich and thought provoking lessons that were also succinct and adorable. Those combination of adjectives rarely happens in one curriculum! So, when I knew we were going to study Ancient History with my older kids, I knew I wanted to supplement with The Precious People with my little one.
The Parent Guide
Even though a grid style guide can stress me out at times, I am learning to see each square as not an assignment to check off, but as an option if it is helpful. Every book suggestion, every handicraft, every recipe is there if it enhances the enchantment of learning, NOT to burden you. So once that is understood, the Parent Guide becomes your friend! It is well organized, easy to follow, and guides you through each day. I appreciate the book list at the beginning of each month so I can put library books on hold for the month instead of week to week. It is also created in black and white, which makes it cost effective to print.
What Do You Receive?
There are 5 things you receive as downloadable printables. If you use everything in this curriculum, it covers 30-weeks of Bible, reading, narration, poetry, copy work, science, history, geography, art, and practical skills. I used it with a 6 year old, and often my 9 and 12 year old would join for read alouds. This reveals that The Precious People has an excellent booklist, which you can even access for free!
The Precious People Recipes
The weekly recipe was one of my daughter’s favorite parts of this curriculum. So much joy on her face when she knew there was a recipe scheduled for the day! There is one recipe per week, which usually related in some way to something we learned. I appreciated that each recipe was practical, and we just skipped over the ones that did not fit our schedule or interest.
Student Copy Worksheets
Again, this supplement that is included with the bundle correlates to the curriculum well with quotes, poetry, or Scripture in either printing or cursive, depending on which is a best fit for your child(ren). I printed these off separately and this was a nice independent thing they could do.
Maps and Artwork
Each week, there is usually a picture study or map reference. Instead of printing these, I kept them as digital files, and the kids would cuddle around to make their observations. I just didn’t want to exhaust my printer for this one, but it seemed to work out just fine for this year.
Readings
Many readings are obtainable from library picture and chapter books, but some were provided by The Peaceful Press as a downloadable file. I printed these and used them regularly. It came in handy to have close by to read a poem or fable for the week. I was able to find some of the picture books as read alouds on Youtube and some chapter books as Kindle Free Reads.
After such a great time with The Precious People, we will be using the next guide, The Kind Kingdom very soon! This covers Medieval History using the beloved Narnia series, which we are excited to dive into. However, this summer, I am using it more as a morning time than as a history course! Will keep you posted on how that goes.
