Curriculum Review: The Kind Kingdom

December 9, 2022 · In: Curriculum, Reviews

This post is a curriculum review of The Kind Kingdom, and the supplements used alongside it.

This year in our history cycle, we are studying Medieval History. I had used The Precious People from The Peaceful Press the year prior, so The Kind Kingdom was the natural follow up.

Being familiar with the format, I decided to use The Kind Kingdom as a morning time instead of our main history spine this time. If my kids were collectively younger, I would gladly have used this as our spine curriculum. However, as we venture deeper into middle school with my oldest child, I wanted her to have more independent reading in history, while still enjoying the whimsy and fun of The Peaceful Press with the family.

This post is all about how we used The Kind Kingdom in our homeschool with 3 children ages 13, 10, and 7, including what we did and didn’t do. Also, I’ll mention a few supplements that were helpful along the way. After reading this post, you will have a better idea if this is the right fit and right season for your family.

Curriculum Review: The Kind Kingdom

The Chronicles of Narnia

The Kind Kingdom uses The Chronicles of Narnia as its spine read aloud through the entire 30 weeks. It is the main reason I chose this curriculum! A curriculum that can base its lessons around great literature, and a classic series no less, is something I had to try.

I highly recommend finding a full color set of the books if possible. It made our experience more engaging. The kids loved the illustrations! The characters are pretty whimsical and sometimes hard to imagine, so seeing them in these books was helpful. The stories are so well told and I am glad we went through this curriculum.

The Kind Kingdom: What We Used

In the beginning, I tried to do everything except the language arts and science sections. In the second half of it, we also omitted most of the practical skills as well. The recipes were fun to make, but some of the other things I just didn’t have the materials on hand for or enough interest to plan ahead for (more on this below).

The Bible reading, hymns, suggested books, and copywork were great! We loved reading from Our Island Story, and also Grimm’s Fairy Tales. My middle schooler did not use the copywork, but participated in everything else during morning time. My 2 elementary aged kids were excited when their copywork matched a section of our reading from that day. It is so funny how those little connections make the time more delightful.

Supplements: Medieval History

The Kind Kingdom is completely fine on its own, and offers many options so you don’t need to add anything to it. However, if you are like me and can’t help but keep your eyes out for hands on activities, I’m here for you! Here are a few small supplemental items we used:

History Unboxed

Remember how I said we didn’t do some of the hands on activities in The Kind Kingdom? It is mostly because I didn’t have it in me to find the resources and materials needed. If you’re like me, take a look at this! I found a treasure of a resource in History Unboxed. They have a variety of boxes for different time periods and countries. I selected Medieval Japan and it contained 3 hands on projects and some extra information about what life was like. It’s a great option when you want to receive something hands on for the kids with all the materials included!

History Subscription Box
History Unboxed: Medieval Japan

Medieval Art Course

A great option that we have been enjoying is an art course called Kingly Kingdoms from Yellow Spot: Sun. I appreciate that the courses combine art with a historical time period. Last year, we used Architects of the Ancient World in our year with ancient history. We learn new art techniques, supplemental history facts, and create artwork from pieces in that time period.

Ticket to Ride: Europe

As a family who loves to play board games, I really should sit down and write a post of our favorites! I picked up Ticket to Ride: Europe to play this school year. Since our geography focus is on Europe, I thought it would be fitting. We already love the original game, so this one just helped us become familiar with the names of cities, while enjoying some family competition.

Geography Puzzle

My little one likes doing these puzzles alongside our history area of study. I picked up this 58-piece Europe Puzzle that she has done during read alouds or on her own free time.

Timeline Cards

This was a separate purchase, but I love using the The Kind Kingdom timeline cards (scroll down to the bottom to find the cards) as a way to visually keep track of the significant people or events that we have studied. My daughter would draw a picture for each card as we studied them, and I would hang them up with clothespins.

Thank you so much for this! This was so helpful and your idea of using Kind Kingdom as Morning Time is genius! My girls (10 and almost 7) so want to do this, but we already have something else for our “main” history and this will such a great way to still be able to incorporate it into our day.

I used to know every word my kids read. Now I have I used to know every word my kids read. Now I have to trust the heart I helped to shape. It’s a tough shift!

God has been reminding me how he parents me with his presence and availability, not control. He sees me, and still draws me in with love. That’s the balance I’m reaching for with my teens: being present, not policing. The goal isn’t to catch them, but to be the one they can come to.

What’s one area you’re trying to give your teen more privacy in this year?

Sorry, not sorry I’m planning for Christmas! 🎄 Ev Sorry, not sorry I’m planning for Christmas! 🎄

Every year I say I want December to feel slower. This year, I’m setting myself up ahead of time with @thedailygraceco Advent collection.

I actually just placed an order for their Teen Advent study, Make Room. While I was there I saw great Advent items for little kids too!

Between dance, volleyball, piano, and church, my car is basically a teen shuttle service. @moshlife sent me a haul of their protein bars, and they are a much better option for grab-and-go than what I usually have laying around. Besides protein, it has a brain blend with things like lion’s mane and ashwagandha, and it actually tastes like a treat instead of a chore.

If your afternoons look anything like mine, go find these at Target before your next carpool pick-up!

Discipleship with your family doesn’t need to feel Discipleship with your family doesn’t need to feel like a burden. Some of the best moments with my own kids have come from a good book, some discussion time, and being present consistently.

Here are some sample resources for every age and stage, from little ones just learning who Jesus is, to elementary kids soaking up the big story of the Bible, to teens wrestling with real life questions.

I’ve also been quietly working on a new study for the tween and teen years, and I’ll be sharing more when ready. Comment “link” to get on the VIP email list to hear about first, along with other family discipleship resources.

My daughter was in middle school when she asked if My daughter was in middle school when she asked if she could go to the mall with her friends from church. Just her, no parents, no siblings.

She’d never crossed that bridge before, and I felt the word “no” forming quickly before she even finished asking.

Somehow, I stopped myself and asked a few questions instead (a practice my husband is great at!). Once I started doing that, I realized something...those “can I” moments were only going to increase. New unchartered water, one after the other, as she got older. I needed to be ready with more than just a reflexive no.

I started keeping a few go-to questions in my pocket - questions that helped actually think it through together instead of me just handing down a decision.

Swipe for the three I use most often.

They didn’t just help her to use reasoning skills. They helped me move from reacting out of fear to a posture of discernment. Bonus: less resentment from her, more clarity for me.

She did end up going to the mall, and it turned into one of those small trust-building moments I still think about.

What’s a “first time for this” moment that caught you off guard?

A new study I’ve been enjoying with my 11 year old A new study I’ve been enjoying with my 11 year old is this nature science study from @beautifulfeetbooks. It comes with a beautiful assortment of literature, along with hands-on activities like this Watercolor Nature book.

I plan for 1-2 lessons a week, and I commit to doing most of the activities alongside her. I have focused on my older two children and catering to where they are, and the one was the best tagalong. However, this year is different with two high schoolers, and I’m appreciating making this time with my daughter.

Until the end of September, you can take $20 off Far Afield with the code “JUICEBOX2026”. I’ll share books included in this study in stories. It has been so enjoyable!

As with most things, my planning rhythm changes as As with most things, my planning rhythm changes as my homeschool evolves. Here’s a breakdown of what is currently working...

🗓 Plan a week ahead maximum: my family’s schedule often has last-minute changes for a variety of reasons. Planning too far out made it frustrating to see so many cross-outs and rework things (visually icky!). A week ahead seems just right for now.
🗓 First I put down any out-of-the-ordinary things: a ministry or work meeting, an exam for a high schooler, a working on set day, or random appointments go here.
🗓 Morning meeting times: I choose the maximum amount of days we can fit in a morning meeting, and I now write the time to aim for up top. With live classes and places to be, this helps us all out a lot!
🗓 6th grade curriculum: I pull out my 6th grader’s curriculum to see what is ahead for the week and write it in my planner (this one is from @thewellorderedhomeschool and “juicebox” will give you 10% off.
🗓 High schoolers: Currently, I write down the start and end times of their online live classes until we all get used to this new schedule!

It takes about 15-20 minutes, and an iced coffee nearby helps a lot. With a full day, my future self is always thankful for the investment in these planning sessions!

Storytime... these small moments are a lot bigger Storytime... these small moments are a lot bigger than I thought. Even when it’s scary, even when we’re not the ones making the decisions, our hope is to raise kids who can think and discern through all the factors.

Another first day of homeschool in the books! Thi Another first day of homeschool in the books!

This one hit different, though. It’s Riley’s last “first day” of homeschool before graduating. I’m soaking up every bit of it.

We always start slow on day one. No rush and no stress. Introducing our morning meeting rhythm, which includes our favorite @worldwatchnews, a read-aloud, a math lesson, and easing into what I know will be a full, busy year ahead. Slow starts provide time to sort through all the logins, set up for each course, and talk about our boundaries, expectations, and hopes for the year.

This year I’m also shifting more of my time and attention to my 6th grader’s schooling. I chose curriculum with that in mind. Every kid learns differently, and that’s the beauty of homeschooling: we get to build the year around the child and life circumstances in front of us.

One thing that’s already in our morning meeting rotation: World Watch News. It’s such an easy, no-fuss way to keep current events part of our routine, and it is a welcome break from book work that ALL of my kids appreciate. Use the code “JUICEBOX” for 2 months absolutely free! It is such a great resource, and I know you will love it.
