3 Homeschool Challenges We Have Faced

September 10, 2022 · In: For Moms

What homeschool challenges have you faced? These are 3 of the main challenges that come to mind when I consider our homeschool journey.

Homeschool Challenges We Have Faced

Homeschooling is paired with so many rewards it is hard to keep track of. I have experienced so much joy and connection with my children because of it.

However, like everything else, homeschooling has its challenges. It will vary for each family, but I gathered my own top 3 to share with you.

Sharing struggles can feel vulnerable because people already can judge homeschoolers for stepping out of the box. I share in order to comfort and encourage anyone who may be right in the thick of it because that can be a very lonely place.

This post is all about homeschool struggles that I have or am currently facing.

Homeschooling Challenge #1

Teaching with Toddlers

When I had one of school age, and 2 toddlers, I felt like a mess. It actually WAS a mess. For someone who thrives with order and structure, it felt at times like I was spiraling. Failing. That season helped me to surrender a lot of things for the sake of sanity.

Not everything was going to go according to plan. No matter how hard I tried or how well I planned. The season was made for fulfilling physical needs, playtime, and practicing good habits. For my school age child, I got this boxed curriculum. It helped simplify things for me as everything was laid out and all books were included. Pricier than what I like to pay for a curriculum now, but it definitely helped me in this busy time.

I found some great educational toys for my toddlers that I only pulled out when my oldest was doing school work. Many tips are listed in this blog post. For my school age daughter, I focused on math, reading, writing, and field trips. Anything extra was a pat on the back for me in this season.

Homeschooling Challenge #2

Teaching to Multiple Levels

As each child entered school age, I really struggled in finding a rhythm that worked for me to cater to everyone. I had yet to discover the simplicity of family style learning, and I felt like I was constantly trying to keep up with my children and mealtimes. Swapping out individual science, history, Bible, and art study for family style curriculum in these subjects have gently moved us to a much more peaceful rhythm.

[RELATED POST: A great option to try for family style curriculum.]

Homeschooling Challenge #3

Teaching Without Words

Elizabeth Elliott says, “Never miss an opportunity to remain silent.” I find this so true, yet challenging. Some things I find myself striving for regularly is leading a life following Jesus in all the ways, leaving room for the Holy Spirit to move in my children, and picking my battles. It is a daily temptation to correct and warn, but I would rather them see me practicing gentleness and seeking what the Lord has to say.

Here is What I’m Learning

Our greatest struggles can be our greatest lessons. Leading our children with a posture of humility can allow the word of God to illuminate everything.

“And this is my prayer; that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled wtih the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:9-11

Homeschooling in a Crisis

Thankfully, we haven’t experienced homeschooling in the middle of a crisis. However, I know the reality is we may each live through this in some form. It looks and feels different for everyone. The Lord is indeed merciful, but bad things still happen for reasons unknown.

I wanted to share this resource I have used during some difficult weeks in case you are in a challenging season now. A Gentle Feast is what we have been using for the last year for history. They offer Morning Time Plans for Times of Crisis, which is 71 pages filled with verses, hymns, read alouds, handicrafts, physical activities, and recipes that all contain whispers of God’s comfort, hope, encouragement, forgiveness, and love.

My prayer is that you do not ever need to read this section, but it is here for you should you ever need it. I appreciate the flexbility home education offers especially in trials. The challenges of life can sometimes offer powerful lessons more memorable than anything found in a book. I hope to use those times for closer connection and putting our faith into action.

This post is all about my top 3 homeschooling challenges in hopes you will be encouraged.

If you’ve ever wondered what a regular homeschool If you’ve ever wondered what a regular homeschool day actually looks like with tweens and teens, this one’s for you. 🤍

Just an ordinary, full day with a “morning meeting” at 1pm, a little baking, and a good read-aloud. The kind of simple, rich days that add up to a messy, full homeschool life over the long run.

I walk you through our homeschool day in my newest video.

I used to know every word my kids read. Now I have I used to know every word my kids read. Now I have to trust the heart I helped to shape. It’s a tough shift!

God has been reminding me how he parents me with his presence and availability, not control. He sees me, and still draws me in with love. That’s the balance I’m reaching for with my teens: being present, not policing. The goal isn’t to catch them, but to be the one they can come to.

What’s one area you’re trying to give your teen more privacy in this year?

Sorry, not sorry I’m planning for Christmas! 🎄 Ev Sorry, not sorry I’m planning for Christmas! 🎄

Every year I say I want December to feel slower. This year, I’m setting myself up ahead of time with @thedailygraceco Advent collection.

I actually just placed an order for their Teen Advent study, Make Room. While I was there I saw great Advent items for little kids too!

The code “juicebox10” stacks with any discount. Grab what you’d like before this collection sells out.

Between dance, volleyball, piano, and church, my car is basically a teen shuttle service. @moshlife sent me a haul of their protein bars, and they are a much better option for grab-and-go than what I usually have laying around. Besides protein, it has a brain blend with things like lion’s mane and ashwagandha, and it actually tastes like a treat instead of a chore.

If your afternoons look anything like mine, go find these at Target before your next carpool pick-up!

Discipleship with your family doesn’t need to feel Discipleship with your family doesn’t need to feel like a burden. Some of the best moments with my own kids have come from a good book, some discussion time, and being present consistently.

Here are some sample resources for every age and stage, from little ones just learning who Jesus is, to elementary kids soaking up the big story of the Bible, to teens wrestling with real life questions.

I’ve also been quietly working on a new study for the tween and teen years, and I’ll be sharing more when ready. Comment “link” to get on the VIP email list to hear about first, along with other family discipleship resources.

My daughter was in middle school when she asked if My daughter was in middle school when she asked if she could go to the mall with her friends from church. Just her, no parents, no siblings.

She’d never crossed that bridge before, and I felt the word “no” forming quickly before she even finished asking.

Somehow, I stopped myself and asked a few questions instead (a practice my husband is great at!). Once I started doing that, I realized something...those “can I” moments were only going to increase. New unchartered water, one after the other, as she got older. I needed to be ready with more than just a reflexive no.

I started keeping a few go-to questions in my pocket - questions that helped actually think it through together instead of me just handing down a decision.

Swipe for the three I use most often.

They didn’t just help her to use reasoning skills. They helped me move from reacting out of fear to a posture of discernment. Bonus: less resentment from her, more clarity for me.

She did end up going to the mall, and it turned into one of those small trust-building moments I still think about.

What’s a “first time for this” moment that caught you off guard?

A new study I’ve been enjoying with my 11 year old A new study I’ve been enjoying with my 11 year old is this nature science study from @beautifulfeetbooks. It comes with a beautiful assortment of literature, along with hands-on activities like this Watercolor Nature book.

I plan for 1-2 lessons a week, and I commit to doing most of the activities alongside her. I have focused on my older two children and catering to where they are, and the one was the best tagalong. However, this year is different with two high schoolers, and I’m appreciating making this time with my daughter.

Until the end of September, you can take $20 off Far Afield with the code “JUICEBOX2026”. I’ll share books included in this study in stories. It has been so enjoyable!

As with most things, my planning rhythm changes as As with most things, my planning rhythm changes as my homeschool evolves. Here’s a breakdown of what is currently working...

🗓 Plan a week ahead maximum: my family’s schedule often has last-minute changes for a variety of reasons. Planning too far out made it frustrating to see so many cross-outs and rework things (visually icky!). A week ahead seems just right for now.
🗓 First I put down any out-of-the-ordinary things: a ministry or work meeting, an exam for a high schooler, a working on set day, or random appointments go here.
🗓 Morning meeting times: I choose the maximum amount of days we can fit in a morning meeting, and I now write the time to aim for up top. With live classes and places to be, this helps us all out a lot!
🗓 6th grade curriculum: I pull out my 6th grader’s curriculum to see what is ahead for the week and write it in my planner (this one is from @thewellorderedhomeschool and “juicebox” will give you 10% off.
🗓 High schoolers: Currently, I write down the start and end times of their online live classes until we all get used to this new schedule!

It takes about 15-20 minutes, and an iced coffee nearby helps a lot. With a full day, my future self is always thankful for the investment in these planning sessions!

Storytime... these small moments are a lot bigger Storytime... these small moments are a lot bigger than I thought. Even when it’s scary, even when we’re not the ones making the decisions, our hope is to raise kids who can think and discern through all the factors.

These everyday moments are so easy to miss, but they are the stepping stones to appreciate the foundation you’ve been building in your family.

I have been working on a relevant product that I’m excited to share with you. I’m in the middle of getting all the logistics squared away, but comment “email” to be the first to hear about it.

Another first day of homeschool in the books! Thi Another first day of homeschool in the books!

This one hit different, though. It’s Riley’s last “first day” of homeschool before graduating. I’m soaking up every bit of it.

We always start slow on day one. No rush and no stress. Introducing our morning meeting rhythm, which includes our favorite @worldwatchnews, a read-aloud, a math lesson, and easing into what I know will be a full, busy year ahead. Slow starts provide time to sort through all the logins, set up for each course, and talk about our boundaries, expectations, and hopes for the year.

This year I’m also shifting more of my time and attention to my 6th grader’s schooling. I chose curriculum with that in mind. Every kid learns differently, and that’s the beauty of homeschooling: we get to build the year around the child and life circumstances in front of us.

One thing that’s already in our morning meeting rotation: World Watch News. It’s such an easy, no-fuss way to keep current events part of our routine, and it is a welcome break from book work that ALL of my kids appreciate. Use the code “JUICEBOX” for 2 months absolutely free! It is such a great resource, and I know you will love it.

It’s Night Zookeeper! My daughter is motivated to stay on task with her other subjects so she can earn her Night Zookeeper time. Somewhere along the way, she’s entered writing contests, received feedback from tutors, and just won the Star Writer Winner award. 🏆

It’s writing, spelling, and vocabulary wrapped up in these wild zoo quests she actually loves, with a parent dashboard on the back end if you ever want to lean on it within your ELA curriculum.

Purposeful, fun screen time that works for both of us? Yes please.
