A Morning Basket for Teens

Homeschooling teens doesn’t mean you have to stop gathering together for family-style learning.

The morning basket doesn’t have to retire when your kids turn 13. Gathering around the table has been, and still is, my favorite part of homeschooling, even as my kids are well into their tween and teen years. I had to gut-check myself… am I holding on to morning meetings because I love them? After talking with my kids, I realized we all value the time together. However, the key is to ensure it is relevant, practical, and appropriate to their maturity level.

What I’ve found over the years is that it’s treasured time for all of us. We have used that time to study a variety of things. Some seasons were focused on beauty subjects (art, music, poetry), life skills (being in the kitchen, teaching how to complete chores well, money management), and my favorite was character studies like reading aloud biographies or focusing on specific character topics like generosity.

Clearly, we have found this morning basket a valuable time in our homeschool. While core subjects meet state standards, our morning basket time has nourished hearts and strengthened skills that matter for maturity. As promised, I’ll list out some of our favorite resources that worked well as morning basket resources in the tween and teen years. I also have a beautiful, brand-new resource designed specifically for tweens and teens coming in 2027. If you’d like to be the first to hear about it and receive launch perks, make sure you sign-up here.

This post is all about homeschool morning basket ideas for teens.

What is Morning Basket (and why it still matters for teens)

Let’s start with what is a “morning time.” Pam Barnhill defines Morning Time as the simple and worthwhile practice of setting aside dedicated time for the family to pursue truth, beauty, and goodness together, where parents and children learn, wonder, and participate actively. Personally, I love this idea. Moms have called it morning time, morning basket, morning collective, and now that my kids are older, we call it morning meeting.

As your child grows in every way during those tween years, you’ll notice one thing remains the same: their need for your support and counsel. It will just look different, and at times even disguised as quite the opposite. However, your child still needs boundaries, modeling specific skills, and guidance toward discerning the right path. Continuing a dedicated morning meeting with your tweens and teens matters more now than ever. This is the good stuff! You are carving out sacred space for connection, discipleship, and those conversations you may not have once they are out the door (and once they have their license, the moments for car talks dwindle significantly).

How Morning Time with Teens Looks Different

A few ways I’ve noticed morning basket looks different in the last few years:

  • More real-life discussion, and less “sit and listen” time: At times, I zoom out of our discussion to just marvel at what the Lord has done over the work of these years. This is such a special time for the family, but for you, homeschool mom, it can be a rewarding experience to see the fruit of your labor and praise the Lord in these later years!
  • Odd start times: With live online classes with start and end times for 2 kids, I’ve had to shift when we gather together. At the start of each semester, I’ll review each day to see when all 4 of us are available to meet for an hour, and write that time in my planner, over the day of the week. This reminds me and my kids what time we’re meeting each day. We rarely meet early in the morning anymore because of later nights of activities, an early online class for one, and my work schedule.
  • Flexibility: If someone is overwhelmed that week with other coursework, we can take a couple of days off or only read one thing together without issue.
  • Shorter, more focused meetings: We no longer have the luxury of two hours to draw things out and chase rabbit trails. I am highly selective about what we use during our time, and given all of our work, I limit our meetings to a maximum of 1 hour. Short lessons and readings seem to stick better anyways.
  • Student-led: In these years, some things are now led by them. We split up the reading, someone sets up the laptop if we have something to watch, and the facilitation naturally spreads out.

My Favorite Morning Basket Resources for Teens

Here are some resources we have found worthy and relevant over the years!

Bible and Devotional:

  • New Morning Mercies for Teens: this daily Gospel devotional includes relevant readings for teens, and I appreciate Paul David Tripp as an author. This has stayed in my rotation for years and we use it here and there when we are in between other readings. Solid and applicable.
  • You Are Seen: this 90-day devotion focuses on encouraging stressed and anxious teens. I found this very helpful during the seasons when your teen may feel overwhelmed by increasingly difficult coursework or demanding schedules.
  • Confidence in Christ (use code “juicebox10” for a discount): there are 2 cover options (designed for teen boys and girls), but this is a study my oldest recommends over and over. She loved the nature of topic, and I thought it was well done in a way that draws teens to lean in and soak in the thoughts of Christ over the messages of the world.
  • A Beautiful Bible: this may be more for the girls, but this Grace Laced Bible is so so pretty!

Worldview and Apologetics:

  • World Religions and Cults Volume 1: a thorough walkthrough of various religions and cults in a 3-volume series. It tackles not only the foundations and beliefs of different belief systems, but also how a Christian can witness to them. For our family, I skimmed and skipped a few portions to keep my kids engaged, but this first volume was worth the read.
  • The Case for Christ Student Edition: a great option for research-loving teens for an apologetic look at Christian theology. Strobel’s journey from skeptic to Christ-follower is pretty fascinating to witness.
  • 12 Truths Every Teen Can Trust: another Paul David Tripp favorite that walks teens through 12 doctrines of the Christian faith that teens can consider and apply. His relevant stories are helpful and make this an easy read.
  • How Jesus Built His Church: we used this set in middle school, and I love that it teaches church history with beautiful photography to help with engagement.
  • Holidays (use code “juicebox10” for a discount): a keepsake book that celebrates Christ all throughout the year. The world has reframed each holiday with its own meaning and marketing, but these short readings summarize every holiday with Christ at the center.

Beauty Subjects:

  • Art Appreciation: this set feels like a art history course with beautiful art cards, teacher guide, full-color hard cover book, and a narration journal.
  • Music Appreciation: from the same publisher as Art Appreciation, we took our time with this study since we only used it once or twice a week. My son really took to instruments starting in middle school so this was a great supplement to provide history and context.
  • Art Makes Me Smart Membership: this membership was a great choice when we had a mix of elementary, middle, and high school at once because it has something for everyone. The art projects vary from easy to more difficult, and it is easy to just search for a project on what we were already studying in history or geography for a complementary lesson.

Life Skills, Character, and Read-Alouds for Connection

  • Current Events (use “juicebox” for a free trial): a resource we’ve loved for years! These 10-minute daily videos share serious world news, along with fun facts about the community, at a level appropriate for kids and teens alike. My kids never complain about it, and I find it helps keep them in touch with the world and gives them conversation starters in their own circles.
  • Launching SOON!: my brand new study will launch in 2027, and I am SO excited to share it with my community. If you want to lean into these older years and make the most of the time together, save a spot in your homeschool days for this new study that can easily be all you need for morning meeting time. Click the link to make sure you’re on my VIP email list so you can hear about it first!
  • Eat that Frog: my kids loved this easy read about avoiding overwhelm by tackling your to-do list.
  • The Generous Family Curriculum: a 26-week curriculum that focuses on the habit and practice of generosity. It provides real-life video examples, short biography reads, and small things you can implement right away. This proved to be timely as my tweens and teens were naturally becoming more inwardly focused.

How to Start a Morning Basket with Your Teen

You can start having a morning meeting with your teen at anytime! I typically start by considering our family values. Those help direct your next steps. Knowing that core subjects like math and science will be covered, what else do you hope your children are equipped with?

Next, check in with them. What topics, struggles, or interests would like to dedicate some time to? One of my kids wanted to learn about relationships and marriage, and at another time, about money management. Checking in with your own values, and then your teen’s current state are great starting points to build a meaningful time together.

Some teens may have a hard time having a positive attitude about things in general. My personal goal is that morning meetings are encouraging, life giving, and filled with value. I want to only invite resources in that would make us look forward to the time together. So, I give you permission to be snobby and exclusive in this area. Select resources that really fit well for you and your kids. If you have not opted-in to my VIP email list, be sure you do to be the first to hear about my new curriculum coming soon.

Want your teens to think of others without you hav Want your teens to think of others without you having to remind them every time? 👋🏽

Keep the cards ready. This greeting card box is beautiful, and it’s also become a quiet way to disciple my teens. It has 40 cards for birthdays, thank yous, sympathy, and “thinking of you” moments. Each tab even has writing prompts and a verse, so my kids aren’t stuck staring at a blank card.

Kindness is easier when the supplies are within reach!

If you’re homeschooling teens, reading together ca If you’re homeschooling teens, reading together can still be highly beneficial and rewarding. You can just change how you do it.

This week’s #livingbooklegacy theme is books that became movies. With my older kids, this has been a great way to build connection and critical thinking. We read the book, watch the film, and chat about it.

A few powerful pairings for teens:
📖 The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom
📖 Rocket Boys | October Sky
📖 Ground Zero | Turning Point Documentary on 9/11

These stories of courage stay with us long after we read the book. Which book-and-movie pairing has sparked deeper interest in your home?

I used to know every word my kids read. Now I have I used to know every word my kids read. Now I have to trust the heart I helped to shape. It’s a tough shift!

God has been reminding me how he parents me with his presence and availability, not control. He sees me, and still draws me in with love. That’s the balance I’m reaching for with my teens: being present, not policing. The goal isn’t to catch them, but to be the one they can come to.

Every year I say I want December to feel slower. This year, I’m setting myself up ahead of time with @thedailygraceco Advent collection.

Between dance, volleyball, piano, and church, my car is basically a teen shuttle service. @moshlife sent me a haul of their protein bars, and they are a much better option for grab-and-go than what I usually have laying around. Besides protein, it has a brain blend with things like lion’s mane and ashwagandha, and it actually tastes like a treat instead of a chore.

If your afternoons look anything like mine, go find these at Target before your next carpool pick-up!

My daughter was in middle school when she asked if My daughter was in middle school when she asked if she could go to the mall with her friends from church. Just her, no parents, no siblings.

She’d never crossed that bridge before, and I felt the word “no” forming quickly before she even finished asking.

Somehow, I stopped myself and asked a few questions instead (a practice my husband is great at!). Once I started doing that, I realized something...those “can I” moments were only going to increase. New unchartered water, one after the other, as she got older. I needed to be ready with more than just a reflexive no.

I started keeping a few go-to questions in my pocket - questions that helped actually think it through together instead of me just handing down a decision.

Swipe for the three I use most often.

They didn’t just help her to use reasoning skills. They helped me move from reacting out of fear to a posture of discernment. Bonus: less resentment from her, more clarity for me.

She did end up going to the mall, and it turned into one of those small trust-building moments I still think about.

What’s a “first time for this” moment that caught you off guard?

A new study I’ve been enjoying with my 11 year old A new study I’ve been enjoying with my 11 year old is this nature science study from @beautifulfeetbooks. It comes with a beautiful assortment of literature, along with hands-on activities like this Watercolor Nature book.

I plan for 1-2 lessons a week, and I commit to doing most of the activities alongside her. I have focused on my older two children and catering to where they are, and the one was the best tagalong. However, this year is different with two high schoolers, and I’m appreciating making this time with my daughter.

Until the end of September, you can take $20 off Far Afield with the code “JUICEBOX2026”. I’ll share books included in this study in stories. It has been so enjoyable!

As with most things, my planning rhythm changes as As with most things, my planning rhythm changes as my homeschool evolves. Here’s a breakdown of what is currently working...

🗓 Plan a week ahead maximum: my family’s schedule often has last-minute changes for a variety of reasons. Planning too far out made it frustrating to see so many cross-outs and rework things (visually icky!). A week ahead seems just right for now.
🗓 First I put down any out-of-the-ordinary things: a ministry or work meeting, an exam for a high schooler, a working on set day, or random appointments go here.
🗓 Morning meeting times: I choose the maximum amount of days we can fit in a morning meeting, and I now write the time to aim for up top. With live classes and places to be, this helps us all out a lot!
🗓 6th grade curriculum: I pull out my 6th grader’s curriculum to see what is ahead for the week and write it in my planner (this one is from @thewellorderedhomeschool and “juicebox” will give you 10% off.
🗓 High schoolers: Currently, I write down the start and end times of their online live classes until we all get used to this new schedule!

It takes about 15-20 minutes, and an iced coffee nearby helps a lot. With a full day, my future self is always thankful for the investment in these planning sessions!
