Loop Scheduling in Homeschool

September 9, 2023 · In: How to Start Homeschooling, Ideas

Some links on this page are affiliate links which means that, if you choose to make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I greatly appreciate your support!

This post is all about how we use loop scheduling in our homeschool.

How can loop scheduling work for you in homeschooling? In a Charlotte Mason style education, there are so many subjects to be covered, that you can easily feel overwhelmed. At least I did.

After researching and seeing how real life moms implement some of her philosophies, I knew I wanted to dip into the pond. However, the deeper I looked, it seemed it was a never ending ocean of studies to go through.

So, I decided we were going to use her philosophy, but only to the extent that it served us well. This is how I stumbled upon loop scheduling, and how we can fit in studies that were valuable, but just didn’t fit into our daily lessons.

Loop Scheduling: What is It?

Loop scheduling in homeschool is merely a way of scheduling to accomplish the subjects you would like cover. As opposed to scheduling a particular subject on a particular day, you keep a list, or loop, of subjects to be completed during the scheduled loop time. It makes your wish list a lot less overwhelming, while still providing an educational feast. Not only can it be efficient for school subjects, but other areas of home life, which I’ll touch on later.

Loop Scheduling: How to Start?

Let’s see if creating a loop schedule would be beneficial to you. Let’s say you already have your morning time, math, language arts, and history scheduled for 4-5 days a week. Now, let’s imagine that you also want to include science, art, nature study, and nutrition in your school year. How and where can you fit this in without dropping the ball? A loop schedule may be for you!

Start by creating a list of the subjects you would like to cover with your child. Let’s create a sample in the next section (I’ll use the above example), but you can easily replace with the subjects you choose to use.

[RELATED POST: Using The Peaceful Press in Morning Time]

Loop Scheduling: Sample

Subjects we want to loop:

  • Piano Lessons
  • Art or Watercolor
  • Nature Study
  • Nutrition

On Monday, we were able to complete a piano lesson. On Tuesday, we accepted an invite to a spontaneous afternoon playdate. So, we skipped the loop schedule subject. Then on Wednesday, we pick back up right where we left off with art. On Thursday, we have time to get to nature study, and if you take school off on Friday, you can cover nutrition on Monday. The schedule just continues on, or loops around and around, no matter what day it is so that the subjects you want to complete are not forgotten.

Our Current 2023-2024 Loop

Currently, we are looping the following subjects for elementary:

  • Art History
  • Piano
  • Procreate or drawing classes
  • Foreign Language
  • Watercolor School

Here is what we are looping for high school:

  • Guitar
  • Foreign Language (dual enrolled at a local community college)
  • Finance and Teen related read alouds with me
  • Watercolor School
  • Adobe Illustrator classes

Additional Uses

Loop scheduling can be used creatively in a variety of ways to suit your needs besides just homeschool subjects. I’ve seen moms use it for things like:

  • Morning Basket Loop
  • Meal Planning Loop
  • Cleaning Loop
  • Chore Loop
  • Art/Handicraft Loop

Another resource is this video workshop from Pam Barnhill of Your Morning Basket. I have not taken this course, but trust Pam’s wisdom from being a follower of her helpful podcast.

This post was all about how you can use loop scheduling in homeschooling.

Just an ordinary, full day with a “morning meeting” at 1pm, a little baking, and a good read-aloud. The kind of simple, rich days that add up to a messy, full homeschool life over the long run.

I walk you through our homeschool day in my newest video.

I used to know every word my kids read. Now I have I used to know every word my kids read. Now I have to trust the heart I helped to shape. It’s a tough shift!

God has been reminding me how he parents me with his presence and availability, not control. He sees me, and still draws me in with love. That’s the balance I’m reaching for with my teens: being present, not policing. The goal isn’t to catch them, but to be the one they can come to.

What’s one area you’re trying to give your teen more privacy in this year?

Sorry, not sorry I’m planning for Christmas! 🎄 Ev Sorry, not sorry I’m planning for Christmas! 🎄

Every year I say I want December to feel slower. This year, I’m setting myself up ahead of time with @thedailygraceco Advent collection.

I actually just placed an order for their Teen Advent study, Make Room. While I was there I saw great Advent items for little kids too!

The code “juicebox10” stacks with any discount. Grab what you’d like before this collection sells out.

It’s 3pm, and my brain is so done. Between dance, It’s 3pm, and my brain is so done. Between dance, volleyball, piano, and church, my car is basically a teen shuttle service. @moshlife sent me a haul of their protein bars, and they are a much better option for grab-and-go than what I usually have laying around. Besides protein, it has a brain blend with things like lion’s mane and ashwagandha, and it actually tastes like a treat instead of a chore.

If your afternoons look anything like mine, go find these at Target before your next carpool pick-up!

Discipleship with your family doesn’t need to feel Discipleship with your family doesn’t need to feel like a burden. Some of the best moments with my own kids have come from a good book, some discussion time, and being present consistently.

Here are some sample resources for every age and stage, from little ones just learning who Jesus is, to elementary kids soaking up the big story of the Bible, to teens wrestling with real life questions.

I’ve also been quietly working on a new study for the tween and teen years, and I’ll be sharing more when ready. Comment “link” to get on the VIP email list to hear about first, along with other family discipleship resources.

My daughter was in middle school when she asked if My daughter was in middle school when she asked if she could go to the mall with her friends from church. Just her, no parents, no siblings.

She’d never crossed that bridge before, and I felt the word “no” forming quickly before she even finished asking.

Somehow, I stopped myself and asked a few questions instead (a practice my husband is great at!). Once I started doing that, I realized something...those “can I” moments were only going to increase. New unchartered water, one after the other, as she got older. I needed to be ready with more than just a reflexive no.

I started keeping a few go-to questions in my pocket - questions that helped actually think it through together instead of me just handing down a decision.

Swipe for the three I use most often.

They didn’t just help her to use reasoning skills. They helped me move from reacting out of fear to a posture of discernment. Bonus: less resentment from her, more clarity for me.

She did end up going to the mall, and it turned into one of those small trust-building moments I still think about.

What’s a “first time for this” moment that caught you off guard?

A new study I’ve been enjoying with my 11 year old A new study I’ve been enjoying with my 11 year old is this nature science study from @beautifulfeetbooks. It comes with a beautiful assortment of literature, along with hands-on activities like this Watercolor Nature book.

I plan for 1-2 lessons a week, and I commit to doing most of the activities alongside her. I have focused on my older two children and catering to where they are, and the one was the best tagalong. However, this year is different with two high schoolers, and I’m appreciating making this time with my daughter.

Until the end of September, you can take $20 off Far Afield with the code “JUICEBOX2026”. I’ll share books included in this study in stories. It has been so enjoyable!

As with most things, my planning rhythm changes as As with most things, my planning rhythm changes as my homeschool evolves. Here’s a breakdown of what is currently working...

🗓 Plan a week ahead maximum: my family’s schedule often has last-minute changes for a variety of reasons. Planning too far out made it frustrating to see so many cross-outs and rework things (visually icky!). A week ahead seems just right for now.
🗓 First I put down any out-of-the-ordinary things: a ministry or work meeting, an exam for a high schooler, a working on set day, or random appointments go here.
🗓 Morning meeting times: I choose the maximum amount of days we can fit in a morning meeting, and I now write the time to aim for up top. With live classes and places to be, this helps us all out a lot!
🗓 6th grade curriculum: I pull out my 6th grader’s curriculum to see what is ahead for the week and write it in my planner (this one is from @thewellorderedhomeschool and “juicebox” will give you 10% off.
🗓 High schoolers: Currently, I write down the start and end times of their online live classes until we all get used to this new schedule!

It takes about 15-20 minutes, and an iced coffee nearby helps a lot. With a full day, my future self is always thankful for the investment in these planning sessions!

Storytime... these small moments are a lot bigger Storytime... these small moments are a lot bigger than I thought. Even when it’s scary, even when we’re not the ones making the decisions, our hope is to raise kids who can think and discern through all the factors.

These everyday moments are so easy to miss, but they are the stepping stones to appreciate the foundation you’ve been building in your family.

I have been working on a relevant product that I’m excited to share with you. I’m in the middle of getting all the logistics squared away, but comment “email” to be the first to hear about it.

Another first day of homeschool in the books! Thi Another first day of homeschool in the books!

This one hit different, though. It’s Riley’s last “first day” of homeschool before graduating. I’m soaking up every bit of it.

We always start slow on day one. No rush and no stress. Introducing our morning meeting rhythm, which includes our favorite @worldwatchnews, a read-aloud, a math lesson, and easing into what I know will be a full, busy year ahead. Slow starts provide time to sort through all the logins, set up for each course, and talk about our boundaries, expectations, and hopes for the year.

This year I’m also shifting more of my time and attention to my 6th grader’s schooling. I chose curriculum with that in mind. Every kid learns differently, and that’s the beauty of homeschooling: we get to build the year around the child and life circumstances in front of us.

One thing that’s already in our morning meeting rotation: World Watch News. It’s such an easy, no-fuss way to keep current events part of our routine, and it is a welcome break from book work that ALL of my kids appreciate. Use the code “JUICEBOX” for 2 months absolutely free! It is such a great resource, and I know you will love it.

It’s Night Zookeeper! My daughter is motivated to stay on task with her other subjects so she can earn her Night Zookeeper time. Somewhere along the way, she’s entered writing contests, received feedback from tutors, and just won the Star Writer Winner award. 🏆

It’s writing, spelling, and vocabulary wrapped up in these wild zoo quests she actually loves, with a parent dashboard on the back end if you ever want to lean on it within your ELA curriculum.
